Skype Integrated in Facebook - Make Calls from Facebook

How does this sound -: You will soon be able to make Voip calls directly from your facebook account. In other words, you may will soon find skype integrated with your facebook account. So along with chatting with your friends, you will be able to place phone calls (Video calls ?).

I read this news somewhere on web while surfing about the latest in the voip world. I kinda liked what I read and thought of sharing with you all. It would be highly beneficial for all, if Skype gets integrated with Facebook. This will be a huge impact on gmail/google talk. A lot of people have been chatting on facebook itself and not on gmail.

According to Allthingsdigital, Facebook and Skype are working to allow Facebook users to send SMS messages and make voice and video calls to friends and contacts via Skype.

It may be vice-versa too, that is Facebook users allow to use Skype using their facebook account. Its more like integration of Facebook (social networking in Skype). Facebookers will be able to sign into Skype through Facebook Connect, which allows users to sign into third-party Websites with their Facebook accounts. The integration is expected in Skype 5.0, scheduled for an October launch. A Facebook-Skype VOIP integration would also be an answer to communications and collaboration capabilities offered by Google.

Lets see what finally comes into market, but I am sure this will be a great move by Skype and Facebook and will be accepted by all.. I am really looking forward for this.

PennyTel New Billing System Updates

PennyTel made some huge news when it was offering unlimited free international calls including free calls to India during the new year season. A large number of people (a lot from this blog) made use of the offer and made account with Pennytel. Some must be continuing with Pennytel only for their international calling needs.

Here are some updates about PennyTel about its new billing system starting 1st October. PennyTel will be changing its billing process to a monthly prorated system, simplifying your statements and invoices.

(1) The billing periods of all PennyTel accounts will correlate with calendar months in the year (start and end on the first and last day of each month respectively)

(2) For those PennyTel accounts whose billing date is not the 1st day of the month, a prorated amount (subscription fee/number of days in the current month*remaining days in the current month) will be calculated on their next billing date. On that date, they will be charged the full amount for the plan’s monthly subscription fee, but the difference between the monthly subscription fee and the prorated amount will be refunded into the PennyTel account as call credits.

(3) If a customer changes their plan, the billing period will be from the day the change of plan was completed until the end of the month. Plan upgrades will involve the customer being charged the full amount for the new plan’s monthly subscription fee, but the difference between the monthly subscription fee and the prorated amount (as mentioned in section 2) will be refunded into the PennyTel account as call credits. Any included calls, minutes and/or SMS that come with the new plan will be prorated for the remaining number of days in the month. Any included calls, minutes and/or SMS that come with the old plan will be forfeited. Plan downgrades will have their old plan’s monthly subscription fee prorated and refunded.

(4) Customers can change their plan only once per billing period (month). A second request will be put on hold and processed on the 1st day of the following month. Customers are able to cancel the second request.

PennyTel is making these changes in order to make its billing system more simplified and effective. May be this way they can attract more customers. In the future, PennyTel is expected to revise some its plan offering some more free calls. I am again waiting for the time when PennyTel start some similar promotion offering unlimited free international calls.

600K Users of 3G Change to Broadband - Still A Small Figure

BERNAMA reported in the recent news "600K Users of 3G Change to Broadband" on Sept. 21, 2010. The exceprts are shown below:

About 600,000 out of the 7.9 million users of the 3G service have changed to the broadband service, said Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
The government had earlier targeted to reach a 50 per cent penetration rate for broadband which would raise the gross domestic product (GDP) by not less than one per cent.
Currently the high-speed broadband (HSBB) project together with Telekom Malaysia in the Klang Valley and several industrial areas is giving coverage to more than 300,000 premises.
As of June 2010, the broadband penetration rate had reached 36.1 per cent.
Currently, there are about 16 million Internet users in Malaysia.
  1. Only about 7% of 3G users actually subscribed to Broadband services. Others, most probably only owned 3G Simcards and phones. Read my blog post regarding "A Myth: Mobile Broadband User".
  2. If Malaysia's population is about 28 Million, it meant about 2.1% of Malaysian users are 3G Broadband users.
  3. WIth the current rate at 36.1% in June and the target to reach 50% in end of 2010, its going to be definitely an uphill task.
  4. Malaysia need a proper and healthy ecosystem. Read the following blog "DNA of a Broadband Nation".

As stated in the Covering Web recently:

Good news everywhere floating on the web about iOS 4.1 jailbreak with GreenPois0n. The hacker behind SHAtter exploit has just published all decryption keys to jailbreak iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4. The keys were published on the iPhone wiki for iPhone 4 on iOS 4.1 to confirm that the tool is completed. Life without an iPhone 4 iOS 4.1 Jailbreak

  1. When I purchased the iPhone 4, Apple has just launched iOS 4.0.2. Thus, I missed the opportunity to Jailbreak it. The latest Jailbreak solution is for iOS 4.0.1 using the Jailbreakme solution.
  2. Currently, all the iPhone 4 owners are eagerly waiting for the Greenpois0n Jailbreak solution from Chronic Dev Team. The last known update reported recently stated it was about 80% ready.
  3. It was quite frustrating when "not much" can be done with a non-Jailbreak iphone. I missed the Winterboard themes and some of system tweaks.
  4. Its quite "boring" when the iPhone 4 is not Jailbroken.... How about you?

Foursquare - An Addictive App for iPhone

  1. I was introduced to Foursquare app for iPhone in the middle of the year when I am using the iPhone 3GS. It has now became one of my favorite app.
  2. It has the ability to link with my Facebook and Twitter account. Thus, its easier to share the places with my friends. Its like voluntary way "to get yourselves being stalked"..!
  3. The client interface as shown below showed how simple it is to use the app. We have a choice either to check-in to the places which have been registered by others or we might add a "new" place. The location-based services of the iPhone will automatically detect the nearby places.
  4. Sometimes, we might noticed that there are several people already "checked-in" at that place at the same time.
  5. For a traveller, you might want to find good tips regarding certain places (restaurant, shop, etc) which are being left by others (or you can leave tips too). There is also an option for "things-to-do", just in case, you might want to check out that place again. It serves a good reminder.
  6. Since the app links to the Google Map, it will help you to find the exact place. But sometimes, the place is not 100% correct due to the inaccuracy of the location based services. If this is the case, you can log-in to Foursquare website to edit that location map.
  7. There is also a summary the whereabouts of your friends.

LocalPhone Make Cheap Pc to Phone Calls

Yeah I know, that we already have had a lot of discussions and posts about LocalPhone
. But Localphone is such a good option to make voip calls, that I thought to remind my blog readers about Localphone.

To all new to Localphone, its a UK based voip provider which offers very cheap phone calls to most parts of the world. For making calls to India you just have to spend about 1pence/min or 1.5 UScents/min. For other countries as well, Localphone voip calling rates are very competitive.

The best part about Localphone is that it offers so many different ways by which you can make calls. Another good thing, you need not to belong to UK to use LocalPhone
. I have been using Localphone in India itself for making my STD (calls to India) and international calls (USA/Sweden/UK) etc, and it works great for me.

Actually, that is what I wanted to highlight in this post. Not very new, but less used option to make calls -PC to Phone calls - yes its PC application, Localphone softphone.

So, If you are among those where Localphone has its local access number, or you make use of direct call feature, calling card feature of Localphone then you need not to try PC to Phone calls. Just enjoy Phone to Phone Calls using LocalPhone
.

Coming back to its Pc application, its a simple softphone (about 3MB), which you can download once you login to your account. Its very simple to install, and once installed and you login - directly make calls to your international destination. The call quality is just great, and I have not faced any problems from past few months. This is actually good when you want to use LocalPhone
from countries like India, Pakistan where it does not offer any local access number.

For business purpose also you can try Localphone softphone as a replacement for Skype. You will definitely be saving a lot more money switching to Localphone. So better try the LocalPhone Voip Service
now, as first call is always free. So may continue if you like the service (I am sure you will like it !!! :)

Update : Localphone is running a promotional offer. When you sigh up with $1 credit, you will get $2.5 credit. That's additional $1.5 credit as bonus.
$1.5 credit is worth 100 minutes to India. This makes cheapest voip provider to India with effective rate of just 0.6 cents per minute. This offer can be used to call other countries as well. What are you waiting for. Just try Localphone.
(No expiry of credit, good voice quality, and sign up with as low as $1).

TruPhone reduced rates : mobile voip

More and more mobile providers are entering the market, and already existent ones are offering new offers. Fring has already reduced its calling rate in its Fringout plan, which we discussed yesterday. So I thought to check out other mobile providers as well.

It seems that the competition in voip is really heating up. TruPhone, global mobile operator has reduced its calling rates to more than 30 destinations worldwide by an average of 60 percent when compared to previous rates for calls made using its Apple iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Nokia and Android smartphone apps. Truphone has also reduced the cost of its unlimited monthly call package to just $12.95 per month.

Truphone's new rates are now as low as 2.1 cents per minute, meaning even calls to some of the most popular destinations worldwide, such as the United States, France and China cost as little as $1.30 per hour. Only thing to note is the Connection fees. Calls made between TruPhone users (TruPhone to Truphone) are free over Wifi/3G.

PS: If you are looking for cheap calling offers to India with bonus credit, Try RebTel as we are offering a special bonus coupon code.

With Free Maps, Nokia Ready to Lead Market Return

Nokia announced that since its launch on January 21, 2010, a new version of Ovi Maps with driving navigation license for free and walkers already downloaded by more than 1.4 million times.

One million download process is achieved in just one week after the launch. The average is one download per second, 24 hours a day, "said Anss

i Vanjoki, executive vice president, Nokia, on the testimony, when we announced the driving navigation license for free and walkers, we are aware that this will change the habits of mobile phone users. A number of users now use their Nokia device for navigation, and as a result more and more users looking for software-site evaluation, developing even faster than we expected, "he explained.

By leveraging the investment in the company Navteq, Nokia managed to remove the navigation license fees for motorists and pedestrians. Nokia also quickly reach many users, who can be targeted to offer a variety of features, content and new services based on location.

"There is a huge desire of consumers to use direct navigation from the phone," said Chris Jones, VP & Principal Analyst of research firm Canalys. "We estimate there are about 25.9 million people who use it at the end of 2010," he said.
Starting next month all Nokia smartphone that features GPS Maps Ovi will be equipped with the new version, with local country map data that has been invested directly into the mobile phone, with a free license.

Currently, Maps Ovi reaching more than 180 countries with the navigation of vehicles and pedestrians for 74 countries in 46 languages, and traffic information for more than 10 countries. The cost to access data depends on Ovi Maps service that is used.

The success of this new version of Ovi Maps are an important part of Nokia's strategy to become market leader in moving maps (mobile maps), navigation and location-based services. By leveraging its investment in Navteq company, Nokia has managed to remove the navigation license fees for motorists and pedestrians.

Nokia also quickly grabbed a lot of users, which can be targeted to offer a variety of features, content and new services based on location.

"This is exciting news for third-party application developers. In just a few days, there are already more than 1 million active users, potentially requiring new and innovative applications based on location," continued Vanjoki.

According Vanjokia, this may be to provide opportunities for operators to offer more data packets and a complete navigation package for new customers and existing.

Until January 31, 2010, the top five countries with total Ovi Maps download the new version is China, Italy, England, Germany and Spain. While the five most popular Nokia devices used were the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97 Mini, Nokia N97, Nokia 5230 and Nokia E72.

Have you tried FringOut to make cheap calls from Mobile

fringout voip service
Sometime back we posted about the new beta voip service by Fring that is, Fringout. Its a newly launched voip service by Fring which allows you to make cheap voip calls directly from your Nokia mobile. Fringout is now again making a lot of buzz in the voip town, and I not very sure why now ?

Fringout is in news on many websites, and blogs stating to replace the voip giants like Skype. Let me describe this service to you again if you missed my last post on Fringout.

FringOut. Fringout is the latest mobile voip application by Fring (Still in beta phase) using which you can make cheap international phone calls directly from your mobile. Fringout is a good option now to make calls from your mobile as its rates are really cheap. You can make ‘almost-free’ mobile calls to family and friends not yet on fring to ANY phone. Call more than 200 countries from 1c/min
- Canada from 0.4 cents
- UK from 0.6 cents
- India from 1.1 cents
Fringout works on Nokia mobiles. Fring is working to launch its iPhone and Android applications. So iPhone users should not worry much !

Surely mobile voip is the upcoming trend, and its time that other voip providers as well start reducing their calling rates. No one is willing to shell out $$$ for making international calls, and actually you don't have to. Many providers offer international voip calls at cheap rates.

Use Fringout, make cheap international calls and let us know your feedback.

Some Powerpoint Best Practices: Steve jobs and Guy Kawasaki

Brian Halliga wrote an article "Steve Jobs & Guy Kawasaki -- Powerpoint Best Practices"

I recently read Guy Kawasaki's "Art of The Start."  In addition to being a good author/blogger, Guy was one of the very early Apple employees and more recently has been a venture/angel investor type where he has listened to countless Powerpoint presentations.  Presumably because he is tired of seeing poor Powerpoint presentations, he spends many pages in his book talking about Powerpoint best practices.  There were a few nuggets of Powerpoint wisdom among a lot of content about it that stuck with me a few days after finishing the book.
His mantra is that Powerpoint should follow a 10/20/30 Rule.  There should be no more than 10 slides in the presentation -- very few people take away much more than one concept from a presentation, so all that other stuff is extra.  The slide presentation should be designed to last 20 minutes, leaving room for ample questions/discussion between slides or after the presentation.  Guy points out that the point of the presentation is typically to initiate a discussion.  He says the font should be size should be no smaller than 30 (Arial font).  Guy says that audiences read faster than you can talk, so that while you are up there talking, they are trying to read your slides and not listening to what you are saying.
He says that there are something like 60 animation features within Powerpoint and he recommends the less use of it the better.  His advice is to use your voice/body to emphasize when a point is important, not some fancy Powerpoint trick.  The only place he recommends using any of this is in going through bullet points on a slide, presumably to avoid having people read ahead.  Speaking of bullets, Guy suggests that bulleted slides should have one point with bullets and only one layer of bullets (lest you violate the 30 part of 10/20/30).

Quality : Skype Voip Phone Calls

Just received an email from Skype voip blog "It's all about quality". I really liked the content of the mail where it talks about the quality the Skype offers and always want to offer to customer.

Let me share some snippets of the mail with you all.

"While Skype wasn’t the first company to allow Internet calling, Skype was one of the first companies to make Internet calling work for the masses. Whether doing a Skype-to-Skype call for free or calling any phone for very little, people have spent over 520 million minutes on average every day talking to people with Skype. "

"our average monthly connected users grew from 91 to 124 million in the last year alone (June 2009 - June 2010). We will continue to build products and features with the level of quality that keeps our community connecting with one another."

"In fact, one seemingly simple feature that the Skype team hears loudest is our end of call customer feedback, where everyone has the opportunity to rate their experience after they make a Skype call (depending on which version you are on). Every score we receive is used to rate customer experience for our different desktop products. For people making paid calls to regular phones, we use the feedback to rate our carrier partners."

"One good example is Argentina. Average feedback scores for calling Argentina were lower than overall scores in South America. This prompted us to start looking for local options. After establishing cooperation with a major local network operator, we saw feedback scores rise sharply - from 3.5 to 4 out of 5 maximum. At the same time, call volumes increased over the next three to four months."

Customer feedback is the best way any company could improve upon, and its really nice if Skype really takes action depending on the customer response. I wonder how many other voip provider do the same. Cheers to Skype !!

Come Make Android Motherboard Manufacturer

Economic affairs in smartphones, Symbian is the most popular operating systems although occasionally, Windows Mobile phones appear in the segment.

However, the presence of Android change the map of the smartphone. Reportedly, now one of the world's leading motherboard manufacturers will also bring an Android phone with cheap price.

For information, phone Android cheapest today is HTC Tattoo worth 300 dollars. The Android GSmart from Gigabyte, reportedly will be sold cheaper than that.

By coincidence, as quoted from GSM Arena, January 21, 2010, HTC and Gigabyte GSmart Tattoo has almost identical specifications. Eg 528MHz processor, RAM / ROM for 256/512MB, 2.8-inch QVGA screen, Wi-Fi, a GPS, Bluetooth, microSD and the audio jack of 3.5 millimeter.

Nevertheless, the Tattoo has advantages. Gigabyte GSmart Android phone reportedly has only two band GSM / EDGE, while the Tattoo has a quad band GSM / EDGE, and two band 3G HSDPA 7.2 Mbps.

Tattoos are also available at 3 megapixel autofocus camera, while the Gigabyte GSmart, only 2 megapixel autofocus camera.

From information circulating, the first Android phone made by Taiwanese motherboard manufacturer has the dimensions 103 x 54 x 13.4 millimeters and uses 1500mAh battery.

Reportedly, Gigabyte GSmart will be present at the range in February next. To be sure, if the price was only slightly below 300 U.S. dollars, these products will face heavy competition from the Tattoo and other HTC products. Because HTC had better take over the world Android.

Meanwhile, the group of developers calling itself the Android-x86, develop Android on the x86 platform so that the OS (Operating Systems), owned by Google that can be used to run a series netbook Asus Eee PC.

In its website, community Android-x86 mention, just a few months after creating a patch that lets Android running on x86 platform, they were aware of these findings can be developed further. This group then decided to further develop the code base that they find in order to support the x86 platform more and menghostingnya on their servers.
