Google Voice on Android and Blackberry devices with faster dialing

Google Voice is getting more and more popular with latest offers around, new feature updates and more people joining. So Google Voice has come up with another new feature that is faster dialing on Android and Blackberry phones.

Blackberry and Android have a vast user base and this application by Google voice will help a lot. Till now with Google Voice application, to connect your call Google Voice app had to make a request to the Google Voice server every time you wanted to make a call to send them the phone number you wanted to dial. Then the call would be connected via a Google Voice access number.

This obviously takes time and you want some faster calling method. When you want to make a call, your phone should connect you as quickly as possible, whether you’re calling via Google Voice or not. So, Google latest application update will allow you to make faster calls how ?

Well that is possible with direct access numbers, Google assign a unique phone number to every person you call. This means that Google no longer need to use your data network to access the server each time you make a call, so calls will be placed much faster.

How to get this application update :
Updated Android app is available from Android Market.
For Blackberry users, you can download the app by visiting http://m.google.com/voice from your mobile device.

So does this update from google is of any help to you ? Please share your views !

How To: Solve "No Sim Card Installed" Error

Yesterday evening, I suddenly received the above error message. The SIM card was not detected by my iPhone.
Here's the method which I tried:-
  1. Rebooting
  2. Network Reset
  3. Taking out and reinsert SIM
  4. Clean the SIM Card
  5. Tested on other phones such as Motorola, Dopod, iPhone 3GS, HTC, Nokia (only Dopod works whereas the rest doesn't)
  6. Tested other SIMs on my iPhone 3GS and it works (it proves that the iPhone is working fine)
Finally, I get a SIM card replacement from Celcom (given FOC). 4 hours later, the phone was reactivated and working fine!

You Can't Follow Apple App Store

Its interesting to note an article by James Midleton on "App Store Opportunity Overhyped".
He wrote:-
"Despite all the hype around mobile apps, only a minority of consumers download them on a monthly basis. Research released this week based on a survey of more than 25,000 European adults shows that only 4 per cent of all mobile users and 15 per cent of smartphone users download apps at least once per month."
"The exception to this rule, unsurprisingly, is Apple, with 64 per cent of European iPhone users downloading apps on a monthly basis."
"In this respect, Husson argued that the market opportunity for app stores is somewhat overhyped, and said players should be looking at sources of inspiration other than Apple to provide a unique user experience"
True enough - Apple have tremendously gained success in their App Store model. Like it or not, the other App Stores have to find the "right formula" in making theirs also a success.

Another article by David Pringle "Apple and Nokia: A tale of two contrasting companies" mentioned:
"The contrast couldn't be greater. Apple's revenues in the quarter ending June 26th were US$15.7 billion, yet it spent only US$464 million on research and development. Nokia's revenues in the quarter ending June 30th were EUR10 billion (US$12.83 billion) and it spent EUR1.48 billion (US$1.9 billion) on R&D - more than four times as much as Apple."
Its worrying to see how Apple grew so fast to overtake the Giant phone maker, Nokia.

Net4.in Voip Home Calling Plans : India

Lately there have been a lot of advertisements about voip in India and unlimited voip calls from India. net4.in is one such voip provider creating this buzz. I thought to check net4.in and its individual plans that is home voip plans, if its any good for people.

net4.in offers a wide range of voip plans for home users. These are Phonewala Home/ SOHO Plans that enable you to use internet connection to make and receive phone calls at very low rates, basically voip calls. So firstly you require Internet (broadband connection) at your home in order to make these calls. I am not sure, but these internet charges are not included in their calling plan rates.

Lets check out the various plans net4.in offers:

1. Homeland Plan : Rs 599/month
500 minutes* of calls to US/UK/Canada
Outgoing calls to landline and mobile destinations (except UK mobile).

I think this plan is not so good as you can make calls to USA/UK for free using Voip or most other voip provider are offering calls to USA/UK at 1 cent per minute (40-50 paisa per min).

2. One World: Available in Rs 100/250/500/1000 denominations
Call anywhere* in the world @ Re 1 per minute only.
Terms & Conditions
* Re 1 per minute applicable to more than 40 countries.
* Re 1 per minute applicable to landline destinations only.
* Calls to rest of the destinations available at Rs 10 per minute.
* For US, Canada, China, Hongkong , Thailand, and Singapore, calls to mobile destinations at Re 1 per minute.
* Validity of 30 days on Rs 100, Rs 250, and Rs 500 packs.
* Validity of 90 days on Rs 1000 pack.

Again as I said before the plan looks costly to me.

3. Gulf Gold:
Call more than 45 Gulf & European countries @ Rs 8 per minute.*
Terms & Conditions
* Rs 8 per minute applicable on calls all destinations.
* Validity of 30 days on Rs 500 pack.
* Validity of 90 days on Rs 1000 pack.

4. Unlimited Silver: US/ Canada
Unlimited* calls to US/Canada @ Rs 2499 per month only.
Terms & Conditions
* One month validity and maximum 3000 minutes per month.

Again a very costly plan.

5. Unlimited Silver: US/ Canada/ UK Unlimited* calls to US/Canada @ Rs 2999 per month only.
Terms & Conditions
* One month validity and maximum 3000 minutes per month.

Well, net4.in home plans are not at all cheap if you compare them to other voip providers. But if you compare net4.in international calling rates to your normal telecom provider then its way cheaper for many countries. So, if you are thinking of shifting to voip from your normal telecom provider then net4.in is a good option. We will soon also review their business plans.

Zenofon free $3 trial credit to new users

Lately there has been very little activity in the voip world with very less voip providers coming up with new promotions. Zenofon has some news for you. I am sure you must be aware about Zenofon but if you have not joined it because of any reasons then it is the perfect time to do so.

Zenofon made a lot of buzz in the voip market because of their unique referral system and free credit giveaway to all new customers. Earlier Zenofon was offering about 20cents-$1 to new customers, however their system lacked resulting in many people doing multiple registrations using Google voice free numbers. Now Zenofon has upgraded their system to catch if the number is original phone number or any voip number (google voice or any other).

Zenofon has announced the beginning of its new promotion that gives away a free coupon worth $3 of free calling to people who join Zenofon and confirm their account with a valid mobile number.

Zenofon mentions on its website that "this program will help Zenofon grow quicker, Zenofon mangement believes, because the company now can give away more free time to actual users. Once users experience Zenofon’s technological superiority, such as the Zenofon international call forward program, Zenofon’s pick your own rate program, and Zenofon’s service that lets non-skype users call Skype lines without having to download Skype, the service will continue its double digit quarterly growth."

Please note that this zenofon offers $3 free calling for all new users that sign up with a valid phone number. This $3 free is divided up over 7 days, (42 cents/day.) Non-mobile numbers get 30 cents free to try the service.

So, if you have not yet joined Zenofon its the right time to do so and make some free voip calls.

Skype launches Click and Call service

Voip leader, Skype has once again brought something new. A new service, Skype has launched its Click and Call services. Skype Click and Call service is specially targeted for its advertisers (pay per call).

Skype is enabling advertisers to generate inbound calls from Skype customers – at no cost to our customers and at affordable rates for participating advertisers. Skype can also call some phone numbers for free as the call is sponsored by advertisers. As written on Skype blog "Click & Call Advertising with Skype works simply by allowing participating advertisers to have their phone number highlighted with a blue Free Call button anywhere online that their numbers are displayed. When the button is clicked, the Skype software launches and the call is connected – at no cost to the caller."

I really like the idea of click to call, where the customer can directly get in contact with the advertiser/seller and the customer does not have to pay anything for the call. In return, advertisers have one more way of advertising and this was they also get direct contact without the need of any mail iterations and chat discussions. Lets see how big this Skype Click and Call service becomes with time.

A Myth: Mobile Broadband User

It can be quite deceiving in the actual number of broadband penetration of each country. Certain countries wanted to be seen as a developed nation by declaring a high number of broadband penetration rate. What's the definition of a broadband user? For example, FCC, defined broadband as 768 kb/s download and 200 kb/s upload. If that's the definition, have we achieved this? In an attempt to declare the "number of broadband users", some telcos purposely provide the numbers below:-

  1. Migrating to 3G. In the early days of 3G introduction, it has been painfully slow to have users migrated to 3G. 2G subscribers are not willing to pay for the new 3G simcards. Thus, telcos subsidized the 3G simcards by giving out free 3G simcards.
  2. 3G simcard but on 2G phones. But are these truly reflect "broadband" users when their 3G simcards works on the older 2G phones?
  3. 3G simcard on 3G phone. What if they don't even subscribe to 3G data package?
  4. 3G simcard on 3G phone and subscribe to 3G data package but the speed is merely below the expected speed of 700 kb/s? Most of the time, when the telco offered them 1.2 Mb/s data package but the actual data throughput is well below 100 kb/s?
Finally, even if the telcos are able to provide the speed above 700kb/s download and 200 kb/s upload, how do we ensure that the subscribers are actually truly broadband user?

LocalPhone drops rates to Pakistan

As we all know, few days back Localphone increased its calling rates to Pakistan. This was due to some restrictions by Pakistan government, however Localphone has negotiated with suppliers and has again reduced their calling rates to Pakistan. Below is the mail, which people received from LocalPhone.

App Store Strategy - Closed Wall Garden Approach

A couple of years back, many telcos tried the "Wall Garden" approach whereby the telcos have their own branded "portal" or "website" that gave their subscribers the ability to access and download contents such as music, ringtones, wallpapers etc. i-Mode is a typical success story. However, it seems this approach cannot be successfully duplicated in other countries. Why?

  1. The phones (unlike today's smartphones) are not ready to download contents like music and applications. They are "meant" to download simple contents such as ringtones and wallpapers which are easy to be duplicated elsewhere. The subscribers can easily cut .mp3 files to be ringtones and also create their own wallpapers using free Utilities.
  2. Most portals are being created by major phone manufacturers themselves like Nokia. There are attempts by various music portals to be offered as part of the telcos wall garden portals. These various content providers makes the handling of telco portal a nightmare. The telcos are not in a good positioned to become a content aggregator.
So, how different is today's Mobile Portal? Apple has introduced iTunes Store for many years (since 2003 and later launch App Store in 2008) and their first customers are on fixed Internet. Initially focused on entertainment contents, they have now moved to application contents. When Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007, the whole mobile Internet landscape have immediately changed. Why?

  1. Apple have Millions of loyal customers before they launch their 1st smartphone i.e. iPhone and the App Store. They are PC, Mac, iPod and iPod Touch users. All of them require iTunes to sync the music, video and the apps.
  2. Even though they have iPhone users, there are still a big percentage of the customer base are using iPod Touch to access the Net. Most of the iPod Touch users are young ones who cannot afford to pay high mobile data charges.
  3. Once the young users become a working adult, they are now able to buy a higher end device such as smartphone and also afford to pay for the mobile data charges.
  4. Most of the Apps found in the App Store requires a connectivity to Internet.
  5. The commercial app is cheap - begins from USD 0.99. Thus, number of downloads is significantly high.
  6. Apple Store provides a consistent purchasing experience and maintain a single portal. Thus, a user felt safe to make a purchase knowing the license are well maintained at a centralized server maintained by Apple. In addition, the user themselves can change device or computer and yet don't have to make another purchase.

  5. So have you tried reading PDF files on it? Answer: Yes - I used either GoodReader, iBook or iAnnotate to read the PDF files.
  6. So can you zoom in and out on PDF files? Answer: Definitely!
  7. So how is it for reading other eBooks on it? Answer: One word - Awesome!

  9. Likewise, if you find, say, a PDF document or other file on the internet, can you download that directly to the iPad for later viewing? Answer: Yes, we can either download it and Open the PDF file using the PDF reader apps or we can Sync the PDF files via iTunes.

Smartphone Myth?

A report by Michael Mace, Principal, Rubicon Consulting, Inc., (Email: mike@rubiconconsulting.com http://www.rubiconconsulting.com) in stated:-
Faced with saturated mobile phone markets, mobile operators and handset vendors in Europe and the US have been searching for new mobile data services that can drive increased average revenue per user (ARPU). But most of those efforts have ended in disappointment. Despite heavy investment, most data ARPU in the US and Europe continues to come from the Short Message Service (SMS) (Pawsey, 2006). The disappointments include:
  • Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) was expected to produce heavy browsing of data on mobile devices, but most of the traffic did not materialize.
  • Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) was supposed to drive extensive sharing of photographs over wireless connections. Although many users happily acquired subsidized cameraphones, the photos they take generally stay on the phones rather than being sent to others.
  • The smartphone was supposed to drive a constellation of new mobile data services and applications. But smartphone sales grew more slowly than initially forecast,i and more importantly, those that were sold have generally not driven the hoped-for rapid growth in average revenue per user (ARPU). Telecom analyst Dean Bubley argues that smartphone shipment data should be heavily discounted because it "includes a huge number of 'closed' operator-customised phones developed on theoretically open OSs (eg DoCoMo FOMA use of Symbian & Linux) which are locked-down for 3rd-party software, plus a vast number of Nokia S60-based devices bought by people who neither know nor care that their device has an open 'smart' OS. The proportion of smartphones bought by individuals who knowingly choose an 'open' & flexible software platform is probably less than 20%." (Bubley, 2006)
  1. But this report was written in 2007 when iPhone have not reached maturity. The new Smartphones such as iPhone 3G/3GS/4 have changed the total landscape of mobile internet. Coupled with easy to use GUI and amazing applications, the users now use the device differently from the days of Year 2007.
  2. Apple, either knowingly or not have transformed the way we look at the Internet.
  3. But then again, Apple is unlike any other Company, its brand was its greatest asset. "What are the great brands? Levi's, Coke, Disney, Nike," Jobs told Time in 1998 " Most people would put Apple in that category. You could spend billions of dollars building a brand not as good as Apple. yet Apple hasn't been doing anything with this incredible asset. What is Apple after all? Apple is about people who think outside the box, people who want to use computers to help them change the world, to help them create things that make a difference and not just to get a job done"
  4. With the introduction of iPhone in Jan 2007, iPhone 3G in July 2008, iPhone 3GS in June 2009, iPad in April 2010 and the recent iPhone 4 in June 2010, Apple has tremendously helped the growth of Mobile Internet usage around the world.

    DNA of a Broadband Nation

    Wikipedia defined DNA as:-
DNA, short for deoxyribonucleic acid, is the molecule that contains the genetic code of organisms. The main role of DNA molecules is the long-term storage of information. DNA is often compared to a set of blueprints, like a recipe or a code.

    1. Like any human body which have different DNA, each Nation's Broadband Strategy also comprised of their own DNA.
    2. In a Broadband World - the DNA stands for "Device, Network and Application". All these 3 elements are intertwined and closely knit between each other. We have seen in many implementations when a telco focused mainly either one or two elements, the end result will not be very encouraging.
    3. For example, a telco believe choosing the best data network will bring customers and revenue - and thus, they chose either WiMAX or HSDPA to offer broadband services. But the growth are minimal. So, what's wrong with this approach?
    4. There are times, the telcos offer their service packages with subsidized mobile phones. Additionally, they created new bill plans that include attractive free SMSes. None of this really drive the mobile data growth significantly. The data ARPU remained below 20%.
    5. NTT DoCoMo's iMode is a good example how DNA works - They gave the users multiple choices of smartphones which have access to Internet. Their high speed network and thousand of applications offer a new Net experience to the users. The Japanese prefer emails compared to SMS. This approach drives their mobile data ARPU into new heights.
    6. However, when it was attempted to duplicate the same approach in countries outside Japan, this strategy does not not work. Why?

    The iPhone 4 Antenna Song

On July 16, Apple made a press Conference --> Live iPhone 4 press event coverage

And there's a new song regarding the iPhone 4 antenna problems.
"If you dont want an iPhone 4 dont buy it! If you bought one and you dont like it, bring it back!

This is life in the smartphone world. Phones arent perfect.
Samsungs Omnia 2 its got four bars to start. None of this is standardizes by the way. Manufacturers come up with their own ways to show bars. It went from five to one bar by holding it tightly. We could have gone on and on, but most smartphones behave exactly the same way.
Five bars to one bar. You can imagine thats a popular way to grip that phone. Next: the HTC Droid Eris. Shows the bars dropping from 4 to zero bars.
We did our own testing let me show you an example of some other smartphones. First, BB Bold 9700, perhaps the most popular business smartphone. Video showing the bars they drop from four or five to one. Pretty much identical to the videos on the web about the iPhone 4.

    Skullcandy 50/50

Skullcandy has made quite a name for itself in the headphone world, thanks largely to its focus on funky fashion and its aggressive marketing tactics aimed at tweens, teens, and young adults. However, the latest Skullcandy earphones to come down the pipe are perhaps the most adult oriented we've seen from the company. Skullcandy 50/50 earbuds, which are moderately priced at US$ 49.95, come in an array of relatively muted color options and feature inline controls for the iPhone and iPod as well as a striking low end response.

The clarity isn't the best and they feel a bit cheap and fragile, but if you're after some earphones with a hint of style and plenty of oomph, these aren't a bad option. As noted, Skullcandy 50/50 earbuds aren't going to win any awards for top notch construction. The earpieces are rather chunky and like the accents and mic module are made of hard, cheap feeling plastic.

The cable is flexible, but it tangles very easily and seems fragile at the connections to the plug and earpieces, both of which indicate the set may not be durable in the long run. The other downside to the design is the relatively large aperture of the earbuds, which may cause some discomfort for those with smaller or not perfectly round ear openings.

A voip battle : Skype and Fring ??

There have been news all over the internet regarding a kind of war between Skype and Fring. Both of them are quite major in voip industry, widely used by so many people around the globe.

Fring updated its iPhone app for the iOS 4 to include the capability of two-way video calling not only over Wi-Fi but also over 3G. This is in response to Facetime by Apple. As we all know that Skype is provided by Fring through its mobile apps, so Skype reaction was not good over this and it said that this voilated Skype's API Terms of Use and End User License Agreement.

Skype's VP of legal Robert Miller said in a blog post: "Over time, Fring's misuse of our software was increasingly damaging our brand and reputation with our customers. On Friday, for example, Fring withdrew support for video calls over Skype on iOS 4 without warning, again damaging our brand and disappointing our customers, who have high expectations of the Skype experience."

Fring was quick to respond with a blog post entitled 'Skype Cowardly Blocks Fring' and went on to attack what it saw as Skype's fear of "open mobile communications".

The above said news is all over the internet with already many expressing their views about this issue. Please share your views about Open mobile communications and what as an end user you expect from these voip companies.

Do Not Use Spirit with iTunes 9.2

Today, I mistakenly tried to JB an iPad 3.2 with iTunes 9.2 and true enough it does not work!

Then, I noticed the following statement at Spirit website.
    What's Spirit?
    • Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on certain firmware versions.
    • Spirit is not a carrier unlock.
    • If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit. Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version.)

      • (If you mistakenly ran Spirit despite using a tethered jailbreak, try these instructions.)
    Requirements
    • Any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2.
    • An activated device: one not stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen.
    • Any version of iTunes 9 earlier than 9.2
    • Syncing with iTunes before trying this is highly recommended.

    Asus Eee PC 1201PN

Asus Eee PC 1201PN, however, only has a single core Atom N450 CPU to go with its Ion GPU, a combination that results in general performance that's weaker than its same priced predecessor. If the 1201N can be found for sale somewhere, it's probably the better buy for now. While the keyboard feel and general build of Asus Eee PC 1201PN are very similar to what we enjoyed in the 1201N before it, its limited processor slows things down, whereas the Ion graphics don't seem to add much more than what we'd already seen in Ion last year and, in some cases, it even seemed to offer less.

In a post iPad era, a Netbook has to offer a low price or an impressive performance, and this Asus really has neither. From the outside and inside, Asus Eee PC 1201PN looks a lot like both the 1201N we reviewed in early January and recent, more affordable Eee PC Netbooks. A plain, glossy black plastic lid that flaunts its fingerprints also comes in red or silver. Inside, more shiny black plastic frames an edge to edge raised Chiclet style keyboard. The double hinge on the lid straddles either side of a battery that has minimal bulge on Asus Eee PC 1201PN's bottom and fits right into the back.

The keyboard's easy to type on and comfortable to work at on a desk or perched in one's lap. The dimpled multitouch touchpad below is flush with the rest of the keyboard deck but responds well to finger gestures. A thin chromed plastic rocker bar for button pressing could have been a little more ergonomic. The LED-backlit 12.1 inch glossy LCS screen has a native resolution of 1.366 x 768 pixels, which matches most laptop displays around 13 and 14 inches. Most importantly, it's a common resolution; browser windows and other programs won't feel shoehorned in like they do with the pixel restrictions on most 10 and 11 inch Netbooks.

Images and video looked as bright and crisp as they did on the Eee PC 1201N we reviewed previously. The stereo speakers on this laptop, embedded on the front bottom edge of the base, are notably louder than other Netbooks. They don't exactly produce well defined music, but we appreciate their volume for TV viewing. Above the screen, a 0.3 megapixel Webcam offers video conferencing and picture taking capabilities, with a passable frame rate and middle of the road image quality.

To its credit, Asus Eee PC 1201PN includes Bluetooth but it better at this price. HDMI is common on any non-Apple laptop, but in the case of this Ion equipped Netbook you might find it more useful than with others, as Nvidia promises smooth 1080p playback of video files on an external HDTV. While that's nice, we imagine more people will want to stream video onto an HDTV (for Hulu, for instance, or YouTube).

Streaming video playback, which relies on Adobe Flash 10.1, worked well sometimes and stuttered at others depending on the site and level of graphic overlay. 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive are increasingly standard offerings for higher end Netbooks. Windows 7 Home Premium is preinstalled, which is an improvement over the Windows 7 Starter many Netbooks offer.

While Asus Eee PC 1201PN is technically the first Netbook with next gen Nvidia Ion graphics, the CPU is decidedly current gen. Unlike the dual core Atom processor we saw in the innovative but hot running Asus Eee PC 1201PN, the single core Atom N450 at the heart of this Netbook is the same one in nearly every Netbook currently for sale. Its performance when augmented with its Nvidia Ion integrated GPU does fair better than other competitors, but Asus Eee PC 1201PN actually is a slower laptop than its dual core predecessor, which cost the same back in January. If you can find the 1201N on sale somewhere, you'll have a faster Netbook.

    Gateway NV59C09u

Gateway NV59C09u is a laptop that's slightly thinner and lighter than the nearly identically configured NV5933u we reviewed recently, but to be honest it won't register to most people who aren't studying laptop lineups with a magnifying glass. A matte silver finish with a wavy lined pattern across the outer lid and inner keyboard deck is a little nicer looking than the older Gateway NV design, but by a small degree.

One design change in Gateway NV59C09u is a flatter lid hinge, making a leaner look at the back edge than the bulkier tube shaped hinge design of other NV laptops. The look inside is nice and clean : shiny black plastic around the inset glossy screen and keyboard, and a small mirrored strip above the keyboard that houses a narrow power button. The keyboard and touchpad have been redesigned on Gateway NV59C09u, to mixed results : the wide, flat keyboard is still technically flat versus raised, but the spaces between keys have been widened to create a bit of a raised key effect, even though the gaps are recessed.

It makes the keys slightly more comfortable, but the chances of crumbs and gunk falling down between keys seem like an annoying inevitability. We do appreciate the dedicated volume keys above the adjoining number pad, a move we wish more laptops would include. There's also an interesting "social media" key that looks like little smiling people, which brings up Gateway's software app for glomming Facebook, Twitter, and other social sites together. This isn't anything that programs like Digsby don't already do, but it's nice to see it so effortlessly integrated.

The touchpad is delineated only by thin raised lines on the keyboard deck otherwise, it's basically an extension of the rest of the palmrest surface. We like a more recessed, dedicated touchpad zone, but it worked fine all the same, with a decent surface area comparable to other NV models. The button bar is flush and a rocker bar (we prefer two discrete buttons), but it's a step better than the overdesigned, annoying thin mirrored strip on the lower end Gateway NV models.

Oddly, however, the new design looks cheaper. The LED-backlit 15.6 inch glossy display on the Gateway NV59C09u has a 16:9 aspect ratio and a native resolution of 1.366x768, which is standard for most laptops up to 15 inches. At this size, we've seen higher-res displays the lower resolution is a bit of a disconnect with the included Blu-ray drive and for the not bargain basement cost of $799, we were a little surprised the resolution didn't get bumped up to at least 1.600x900.

Blu-ray discs looked good, but not distinctly better than a good DVD player experience. To really show off your discs, you'll probably want to go through the HDMI out port. Above the screen, a high-def Webcam offers video conferencing and picture taking capabilities, with a maximum resolution of 1.280x1,024. This is one of the few upgrades from Gateway NV59C09u, which could record VGA quality video only. We appreciate the spec bump, and the quality is better than average for laptop Webcams.

Skype software is preinstalled along with a large collection of other programs we're not sure we need Gateway to load on for us. The integrated speakers located above the keyboard and under thin black mesh grilles that too easily trapped small dust particles have better than average volume and bass for movie watching, but are really no better than other NV laptop speakers we've tried. They're good enough and certainly loud enough for video watching, music, and Web chat, but they're not knockouts sonically.

    Dell Vostro 3300

Dell Vostro 3300 is meant to glide somewhere between personal and business, and that's exactly what the design of Dell Vostro 3300 suggests : metal and black define the outside, with squared off edges on the front and back, and slightly rounded sides. Dell Vostro 3300 comes standard in Aberdeen Silver (which is what we had) in Core i3 configurations, with the option of adding Lucerne Red or Brisbane Bronze color schemes in the Core i5 configuration for an extra $40.

Overall, the design lies somewhere between the trendy Adamo and the more utilitarian Latitude. Plain, ThinkPad-esque matte black defines the interior of this minimalist Dell, from the keyboard deck up to the material surrounding the above screen Webcam. A few backlit media control keys and a backlit power button above the keyboard are the only flashy touches. Because this Vostro has a slightly thick and squared bottom half, there's room to fit audio in or out jacks, an SD card slot, and a Wi-Fi toggle button on the front edge, although they're a little tightly packed together in the center below the track pad.

The keyboard on Dell Vostro 3300 is similar to ones we've seen on other recent Dell laptops : it could be best described as a flat keyboard with individually raised keys. Though there's no number pad, it's easy to type and feels comfortable during extended writing sessions, and the keyboard goes edge to edge, maximizing the laptop's compact dimensions. The keyboard on our model wasn't backlit and that isn't available as an upgrade option on this exact model, but there is a Dell Vostro 3300 that includes a backlit keyboard on Dell's Web site starting at $708.

Above the keyboard, a small backlit touch controlled media bar has basic play and pause and volume functions. It's useful, but not overly so for a business focused machine. These might have been better spent on videoconferencing and other productivity related toggles. To the right of these are a few LED indicators for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and battery status. The track pad is wider and responds better than that of some brands we've seen. The plain discrete buttons below are nothing remarkable and could be slightly larger, but at least they're not over designed.

A 13.3 inch LED-backlit display on Dell Vostro 3300 has a 16x9 aspect ratio and a native resolution of 1.366x768 pixels, which is standard for most laptops up to 15 inches. These screens also come standard with antiglare, which is far rarer. The experience we had was excellent the screen has the glare free quality of a matte display, with the crispness found in a glossy coating. Text and video were easy to watch in any lighting. The included 2 megapixel Webcam had better clarity, sound recording and light sensitivity than most Webcams we've come across, making it perfect for video conferencing.

A small LED light also indicates the camera's in record mode. Though the camera's professional, Dell's selection of cartoonish effect overlays in its included camera software can only be described as cheese ball. There's only one speaker on Dell Vostro 3300. It's located on the front left edge of the laptop's bottom half, and though it sounds loud and clear, its off center position makes it a weak choice for movie playback. Should you choose to take a break with a DVD, you might want to pack some good headphones.

Dell Vostro 3300 doesn't have a huge selection of ports, but it does have eSATA. It's lacking HDMI-out, however, which is a feature that's becoming nearly universal on all laptops (excluding Macs). Thankfully, at least there's Bluetooth. Configuration options abound on Dell Vostro 3300, as is often the case with Dell laptops. Customization on Dell's Web site offers either a Core i3 or i5 processor, along with RAM configurations from 2GB to 4GB and hard drives from 250GB to 500, all at 7,200rpm. RAM can be expanded up to 8GB.

Despite Core i3 and i5 processors being 64 bit ready, Dell chose to make 32 bit Windows Home Premium the default OS. Upgrading to 32 bit Professional or 64 bit Home Premium costs an extra $70, 64 bit Professional, an extra $120. Depending on the support software, memory and other options chosen, Dell Vostro 3300's price can climb above $1,000, where it no longer seems like a great bargain. We'd advise you keep software services to a minimum and focus on basic needs. Our configuration, at over $800, just straddles the border of what we'd consider paying before looking elsewhere.
