Samsung M620

The Samsung SPH-m620, affectionately dubbed the "UpStage," is so unique, you have to see it (and hear it) to believe it. On one side, it's a slim, stylish Samsung phone with stereo Bluetooth wireless technology, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. On the other side, it's a slim, stylish Samsung music player with touch sensitive media controls and a stereo speaker.

One side offers the typical look and feel of a modern looking MP3 player, and includes advanced music and media control keys, as well as a large 2.1 inch full color 176 x 220 display perfect for watching optional Sprint TV media. The "phone side" sports a secondary screen (1.4 inches, 176 x 65 pixels) that can display time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more.

The 1.3 megapixel camera lens is housed directly above this display. Up and down buttons for volume control are placed on the left side, while most of the phone's features and on screen menus are controlled by a five ways center button on the handset's control pad, also located on the "phone side."

The phone includes 53 MB of internal memory plenty of memory for running the music player and other advanced applications and micro SD cards can supplement the phone's memory with its built in memory card slot. And because the m620 has an internal antenna, there's nothing to snag or break off. Charging and USB data cable connectivity are available on the phone's bottom edge. Samsung was even nice enough to throw in support for PictBridge direct to printer printing (via USB).

In its own right, the Creative Zen Vision M is a very capable digital audio player, video player, photo viewer, FM radio, and more. Indeed, one could go on and on about how it has the right specifications to make it a constant companion for entertainment on the go. Let's get things out in the open. The Apple iPod is the 800 pound gorilla when it comes to the digital media player business and, unavoidably, every other device is measured against it.

In most respects, the Vision M matches up pretty well, and there are few things you may even like better. Length and width dimensions are exactly the same at 4.1 and 2.4 inches respectively.

When it comes to girth, though, the iPod has the Vision M beat the Vision M is .7 inches thick, while the iPod measures .4 inches. The Vision M is slightly heavier, too. These details aside, the Vision M feels comfortable, yet sturdy, in the hand, with curved surfaces in all the right places.

Creative takes a somewhat different approach with the Vision M's controls, answering the iPod's Click Wheel with a vertical touch pad which allows you to scroll up and down menus and control volume plus four buttons that offer navigation through the user interface. The contextual menu button on the bottom right is a welcome addition, allowing you to make quick settings changes and view information about media files on the fly functions that are more cumbersome on an iPod.

Creative could have made the buttons a bit more sensitive they require a firm press that gives an overall feeling of clunkiness to an otherwise well designed user interface. Another annoyance is the touch pad's over sensitivity it's easy to make selections unintentionally, sending you on a wild ride through the user interface. The Vision M's screen, which measures 2.5 inches diagonally, offers sharp details, vibrant color, and excellent response with little or no video ghosting during high action sequences.

The 320 x 240 resolution is to be expected from a device this size, and although it's small, you'll likely have no trouble enjoying video while you're sitting on the subway or a flight, or in the back seat of a car. Our only nitpick was the screen's less than stellar viewing angle, especially when compared side by side with a video iPod. While this can be good for maintaining privacy, the narrow viewing angle also means that friends beside you will struggle to see anything other than a black screen.

Creative Zen MicroPhoto 8GB

Delphi XpressRC

Out of the box, Delphi's XpressRC looks unexceptional. Like many other XM satellite radio receivers, it has 10 preset buttons, a five way control knob, and all the accessories you'll need to install it in your car. It wasn't until we powered up this $169.99 unit that we noticed the XpressRC's real draw for channel hoppers. Other receivers only display information for the station currently playing, but the XpressRC shows artist, track, and channel information for three additional stations, neatly displayed on a column on the right side of its screen.

Given that unique ability, it's no wonder Delphi fitted the XpressRC with a razor sharp color display.

Onscreen text jumps out at you, whether you're viewing it in complete darkness or in bright daylight.

With a twist and push of the knob, you can easily browse and tune into other programming.

The knob, which makes an audible click whenever you rotate it, is very responsive. We weren't always successful pressing the knob to confirm a selection, however, especially while driving. We'd either press it to the side by accident or not apply enough pressure. The XpressRC can store up to 10 of your favorite songs, and, thanks to a 60 minutes buffer, lets you pause and replay live radio. We paired the receiver with Delphi's Premium Sound System, a $149 dock that lets you take the receiver into your home.

The dock delivered very clear and strong audio adequate to fill a large room, if not quite powerful enough to rival the output of a full fledged stereo system. For casual purposes, the dock is more than sufficient, although at low levels its speakers emitted an audible hiss, which at times muffled the music we were listening to. Overall, the XpressRC has more pros than it does cons. Whether you're looking to upgrade to a new receiver or you're dipping your feet into satellite radio for the first time, it's the best XM receiver you can get for your dollar.
