Eee Desktop

Asus recently launched Eee laptop has garnered some pretty rave reviews all over, not only due to its design but bang for your buck as well. As the old (but true) adage goes, if it aint broke, dont fix it. Asus has reported that it plans to launch a desktop version of the Eee PC in the near future.

Although no concrete release date has been assigned at this point in time, it could be much sooner than we think, quite possibly sometime next year. Just like the $199 gPC that is currently available at Wal-Mart, the Eee PC desktop will not come with a monitor but it ought to jostle for some respectable amount of sales in the ultra value segment with an extremely competitive price point.

The whole idea behind this exercise is to boost Asus brand recognition and performance in the global desktop market. This is a sign that the company is growing in the right direction, after all, they have done pretty admirably where laptops are concerned to date.

Some folks might still stay on the sidelines as rival hardware vendor Acer has touted that demand for the Eee PC is not as robust as expected while unit returns are up, but Asus own internal data (unsurprisingly) indicates a return rate of less than 1% with 5,800 units moving weekly on an average. Statistics, damned statistics.

Do you think that successful sales of the Eeec laptop will in the end result in a successful desktop offering? While most people would like to think so, there are still many factors to take into consideration, such as the availability of components as well as the intention to build a desktop that is as environmentally friendly as possible something that cannot be achieved at this point of time without raising the final cost substantially.

As we all know, businesses arent set up to do charity so that could be a potential stumbling block. Do you see yourself to have a need for an extremely cheap desktop, or would you prefer to pay slightly more for a whole lot more oomph?

Asus multimedia monitor

Weve already talked about convergence in gadgets where mobile phones increasingly are coming with high resolution cameras, MP3 players and even with an astonishing 8 GB of internal memory.

Now it seems the monitor manufacturers want a piece of the action too. The new ASUS PG1191 19 inch monitor comes packed full of extras you wouldnt expect to see in a conventional monitor.

The 19" LCD screen comes with a 1024768 resolution and 800:1 contrast ratio, as well as a standard DVI input, but thats where standard ends.

To enable you to watch films, videos and play 3D games without ghosting, Asus have added a so called TraceFree technology, boosting the response time to 2ms apparently producing a smooth, video like quality.

Theres also some intelligence built in the monitor, which can somehow detect whats being shown on the screen and optimise the display mode, choosing from 5 different modes.

Incorporated into the monitor are :

a USB 2.0 hub with three ports

a 1.8 Mega Pixels web camera

an integrated 2.1 speaker system (two 10-Watt speakers and 15-Watt super bass system)

 ports for speakers and microphone

I dont know why they didnt go all the way and feature a built-in microphone, but maybe sound quality was a concern.

But who cares, its a cool system and I want one! There are no details on pricing though; so Im keeping my fingers crossed.

Samsung releases 3rd gen Blu-ray player

Samsung clearly signals its intention to support the Blu-ray camp by introducing the BD-P1400 Blu-ray disc player the third generation of its kind.

The BD-P1400 is no slouch when it comes to performance, boasting full compatibility with 24 movie frames per second playback. This works out great since most movies are filmed at 24 fps, hence the BD-P1400 is capable of playing back movies in their native format resulting in a significant reduction of unwanted artifacts at the same time.

In addition, setting the players Movie Frame (24Fs) feature to On enables customers to adjust the HDMI v1.3 output to 24 fps, resulting in a crisp, theater like experience. Not only that, all of these players will also support 60Fs for enhanced compatibility with other HDTVs that are currently available in the market.

Bitstream technology is also supported by the BD-P1400. Customers will be able to hook up the BD-P1400 to other HD compatible devices for a high level of A/V enjoyment in a cinch.

As everyone knows, watching a movie doesnt just consist of great visuals - you can only experience it fully with equally great sounding audio. The Samsung BD-P1400 does not disappoint in this aspect, featuring advanced HD audio decoding, Dolby Digital and DTS audio playback, Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD for a variety of clear, full-bodied sound options.

In addition, the HDMI v1.3 connection boasts HDMI CEC (Anynet+) technology that enables customers to use a single remote control to operate the BD player, TV and other A/V products from Samsung itself. Not only that, the BD-P1400 is able to up convert standard DVD discs to full HD 1080p resolution courtesy of the HDMI connection, but be warned that the results will never measure up to a true blue Blu-ray disc.

Slimmer LCDs from Sharp

What is the saying? No pain no gain! Well for anybody that has been on a diet and slimmed down you will know that there is usually some pain involved, but in the case of the new D64U, the latest addition to the Aquos LCD TVs from Sharp, that may not be the case.

Apparently some creative re-engineering has helped reduce the size. Add to that the thinnest screen on the market providing a 176 degree viewing angle, some tightly squeezed in speakers and you get the new slimmed down models.

The good news is that the specifications still remain high on the 1080p line, with HDMI inputs, component and composite inputs on both the side and rear, where you will also find a dedicated PC input along with the RS-232C and S-video.With the inputs compatible with 1080p signals from Blu-ray and gaming devices this is a pretty big, small TV.

There will be a 42-inch $2,099.99, 46-inch $2,699.99, and 52-inch $3,799.99 available in August and there is a 65-inch scheduled for September but no price as of yet.

And . if you hadnt noticed already from the picture, it is a pretty cool way of demonstrating your (lack of) size compared to your competitors.

Sony's Magic Wand - Walkman NW-S203FS

Sony's Walkman range has been a bit down and out for a while but they are trying hard to revive it. Most recently with the NW-S range of Walkmans, specifically designed for working out be it in the gym or on the pavement. It may look a bit like a test tube but it dont let its minute size and phallic looks deceive you it packs a real punch.

Is it ready to use?

No. You have to install the Sony's very own sync software which is relatively easy to use but not nearly as seamless as it rival iTunes. The software will not run on Windows Vista which is a bit of a problem as now all PC's sold come with Vista.

After you have installed the software it will automatically scan your hard drive for music. Soon you will have your entire music collection on that one program. Now you can go on to create playlists and select what music you want on your Walkman.

Your Walkman is now ready to use, stacked full of your favourite tunes.

Is it easy to use?

As I previously stated the sync software provided, which is the only software the Walkman will work with is relatively easy to use but it could be better.

The Walkman itself is controlled by what I can only call a joystick on top of the device. The joystick moves up and down parallel to the device and clicks in at three stages, the first to select the albums, the second to select artists and the final stage to lock all buttons on the device. It also moves side to side to select the track or option you prefer. It is not rocket science to use the Walkman but it lacks the pick it up and you know how it works of the iPod nano. This is understandable as it has a tiny little LED screen which only displays one line at a time.

Sony has included a cool new feature on the Walkman, which I admit, is a bit of a pain to set up, as you have to put in how much you weigh, how tall you are and the distance between steps when running and walking, which is not that easy using that little joystick. But it is all worth it as this little Sony Walkman comes with a built in G-Sensor which in sport mode using what they call Active Playlists is able using two playlists of your choice, to switch between the two playlists depending on whether you are walking or running. It also gives you a detailed summary of your run (or walk) after you reach your pre-selected goal, which can be set to distance, time or calories burnt.

Is it value for money?

When we received the Walkman about two weeks ago, here at Gadget.co.za where very surprised to find the amount of accessories we did in the box, the Walkman came with, as standard an arm strap and headphones (which I will comment on later), this may not seem so amazing but look what features it comes with inside it. The Walkman comes with a Pedometer (G-Sensor), an FM radio, stopwatch, calorie counter.

To get these features including the armband will cost you over R2 000 if you had to buy them as accessories to the Apple iPod as none of them come as standard. So the iPod nano 2gig with the same features as the Walkman 2gig would cost in total R3 614, approximately R2000 more than the equivalent Walkman NW-S.

Lets not mention the fact its water resistant and its made out of aluminium.

The only serious criticism I have for the Walkman is their so-called sports-style headphones have to be the stupidest things ever designed by mankind; they are massive so they only fit geriatrics, the cord is far too long and they keep on falling out when doing anything bedsides have tea . In their favour the sound quality decent though.

But starting at a relatively cheap R1 200 for a 1gig you can afford to get yourself a new pair of headphones.

In conclusion the Sony Walkman NW-S203FS is a brilliant piece of equipment that every runner should own, it works well, sounds great (with headphones that fit) and is very well prised. Unfortunately it does not have the cool factor of the iPod so it wont create any dent in sales for Apple, but it should.

The Worlds Smallest Wireless Earphone

Fujikon Industrial Holdings Ltd, Hong Kong manufacturer of headsets, microphones and other audio components has formed a strategic alliance with wireless audio technology provider Kleer.
Combining Fujikons expertise in designing and manufacturing cutting-edge audio products and Kleers technological expertise, the worlds smallest wireless earphone, is ready for launch.

Announced in January 2007, Kleers 2.4GHz wireless digital audio technology combines high digital audio performance with ultra-low power consumption. The technology can be applied to portable audio and media players, audio or theater systems and automotive systems, and is used by Fujikon in the first of its kind un-tethered earphones.

Kleers iPod Nano Wireless Adapter was highly acclaimed for being capable of delivering full CD quality audio without any loss in sound quality. It received a good deal of positive reviews, putting the brand in the ears of many professionals of the audio gadgetry arena.

Kleers Audio LP modules offer the following advantages over Bluetooth:

  • Lossless transmission of 16-bit, 44.1KHz-sampled stereo audio to deliver full CD-quality audio. Lossless transmission also enables the beaming of music or other data files from one player to another.
  • 10 times the battery life of a comparable Bluetooth solution. This enables OEMs to integrate wireless technology into portable audio players without suffering a large penalty in battery life. And OEMs can introduce new small form factor products such as wireless earphones knowing that small batteries will still give them acceptable battery life.
  • Best-in-class ISM band co-existence by dynamically selecting one out of 16 narrowband channels, each of which can fit in the gaps between wireless LAN channels, and ensuring that only unoccupied channels are selected.
  • Kleers Listen In technology that enables users to share the listening experience by having multiple wireless earphones, headphones or speakers listening simultaneously to the same audio source.
Fujikons ground-breaking earphone model is empowered with complete wireless stereo application between the left and right audio channels, is compatible with various portable media devices, and can be used with up to four devices at the same time.

The wireless earphones are already available as part of the S2501 mp3 Player.

Espresso Machines

Espresso

Strong. Dark. Creamy. These are all descriptions of Espresso, the very thick, strongly flavored coffee beverage. Espresso is made by forcing hot water through dark roasted, finely ground, coffee beans.

The process presses the water through the ground espresso beans which, in coffee brewing, differentiates Espresso from regular coffee.

Espresso is noted by the creamy, tan colored froth that floats on the top of the dicrema. Espresso is thick, it is concentrated coffee flavor and generally served in small quantities or used as a base for another drink such as lattes, cappuccinos or mochas.

Espresso Coffee Beans

Espresso, generally, comes from the specific coffee bean called Coffee Arabica. More commonly known as arabica, and sometimes called the similar Robusta is the specific type of coffee bean used in Espresso Coffee Makers.

Arabica type coffee beans are more difficult to grow than regular coffee beans are. This increases the cost of the bean. In turn, you have more than likely noticed, Espresso is more expensive than a regular blend of coffee.

Brewing espresso is a highly skilled craft, an art form if you will. A barista is someone who is considered to be a master at brewing espresso. Delonghi Products carries a complete line of affordable Delonghi Espresso Makers so everyone can be a barista in their own home and brew restaurant quality espresso in their own homes.

Espresso Makers

True Italian afficionados relate espresso brewing and espresso makers to the rule of four M's. Mano for hand, macchina for machine, (espresso machine), macinzaione for grind and miscela for blend.

The process defined is to force 195F water through the very finely ground espresso beans, which in the espresso machine, are called a puck. The rich, syrupy beverage contains the heavy oils from the coffee beans which are extracted and emulsified through the pressure forcing process. The espresso machine has a steam wand which steamd and froths milk when making latte and or cappuccino.

Microwave

Instead of heating the food from the bottom (like a regular oven does), a convection oven uses a built in fan to circulate the hot air through the cooking area.

Food heats faster because the moving air strips away the thin layer of air which otherwise would surround and insulate the food.

The heat is also distributed more evenly, without "hot spots". Food cooked in a convection oven rarely burns and comes out nice, crispy and evenly cooked.

Advantages of using a convection oven

Compared to regular ovens, convection ovens offer the following advantages:

  • Faster Cooking: When hot air is blowing onto food, as opposed to merely surrounding it, the food tends to cook up to 20% more quickly.
  • Lower Temperature: The food in a convection oven is cooked at a lower temperature than in a regular oven. This saves you both time and energy.
  • No Burns: Because food is cooked more evenly in a convection oven, it burns less frequently.
  • Less Food Shrinkage: With a convection oven, you can probably squeeze an extra serving out of whatever you're cooking.
  • More Efficient Cooking: A convection oven can be filled from top to bottom as long as an inch of space is left for the air to circulate between the food and the oven walls. Also, since the air circulation in a convention oven is the same throughout, food will cook at the same rate no matter where it is placed in the oven.
  • Superior for Roasting: Because the evenly distributed heat of a convection oven is better for roasting meat, many convection ovens come with built-in rotisserie racks.

Cooking in a convection oven

Anything you can cook in a regular oven meat, pizza, poultry, breads, pies, even delicate pastry - can be cooked in a convection oven. Experiment with your favorite recipes by cooking them at a slightly lower temperature and for a slightly shorter time than you normally would.

  • When following a recipe designed for a conventional oven, heat the convection oven to a temperature 25F lower than the recipe suggests.
  • Expect food to be done in less time (as much as 25% less) than it would be in a conventional oven, even with the 25F reduction. The longer you're cooking something, the greater the time savings; for instance, a turkey may cook an hour faster in a convection oven than in a regular oven, but you may only shave off a minute or two when baking cookies.
  • Use baking pans with low sides to get the full benefits of convection.
  • Go ahead and fill every rack in the oven, but still keep an eye on browning. Depending on your oven, you may have to rotate pans for even cooking.
  • Most ovens let you turn convection on and off. Play around with it. If you want a well browned roast that's also slowly cooked, turn the convection on at the start or at the end, but off during the rest of cooking.
  • The fan sometimes blows parchment or foil around. Use a metal spoon or fork to hold down the parchment.

Digital Programmable Thermostats

A thermostat is a device that allows you to control the temperature inside your home by controlling the functions of a heating and or cooling system. Using a thermostat can save you up to 30% of your heating costs (since your heating system would turn on only when needed to maintain desired temperature, as opposed to running 24/7). Thermostats also offer an additional benefit of not needing to walk over to your furnace every time you wish to change the room temperature.

Programmable thermostats basically work the same way as the digital manual ones, but they are far more convenient.

Once you program the thermostat to customize the system's operation to fit your lifestyle and schedule, all you have to do is relax and let it do all the work.

To stay comfortable and save energy all season, you simply program into its memory the temperatures you need, at what time of the day.

You only need to program your thermostat once until the season or your lifestyle changes.

Depending on the model, a thermostat can be programmed in one of four ways :

  • 1 day programming: The desired temperature can be set to change throughout the day
  • 5-2 days programming: Like above, and you can have separate programs for weekdays and weekends
  • 5-1-1 days programming: Like above, and you can have separate programs for weekdays, Saturday and Sunday
  • 7 days programming : Like above, and you can have separate programs for each day of the week
Benefit Thermostat :
  1. Convenience. Instead of heading towards your furnace every time you need to tweak the temperature up or down, you can place a thermostat at a convenient spot.
  2. Energy savings. Instead of running your heater or furnace 24-7, a thermostat turns it on only when it is needed to maintain the desired temperature. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can program it to turn the heat down when you do not need it. Programming temperatures around 63F on cold winter nights, when you're snuggled under blankets, can help you save as much as 30% on your heating costs. You can save even more by programming your system to "setback" the temperature when your family is away at work, at school, or on vacation.

Installing a thermostat

Some thermostats are simple enough to be installed as a DIY project, while other require professional installation. In many cases, some wiring work may be required. Consider the following guidelines when installing your thermostat:

  • Make sure you have the right thermostat for your system. A thermostat meant to be used with a heat pump may not fit any other heating system.
  • The thermostat should be located away from the room's cooling or heating vents or device, yet exposed to general airflow from the room to be regulated. If the thermostat is too close to the air vent, the system will tend to "short cycle", with numerous starts and stops that can be annoying and in some cases shorten equipment life.
  • Placing the thermostat in open hallway may be most appropriate for a single zone system, where several rooms are operated as a single zone. In this case, the doors to these rooms should be open when the system is in use.
  • For a larger area, setting up multiple zones controlled by different thermostats can save considerable energy, allowing different rooms to vary in temperature, and turning the heat and/or cooling off completely where it is not needed.

The Aeronautical Fan

This is the portable and compact fan that remains whisper quiet while generating more than double the air flow of lesser fans of a similar size.

Designed by an aeronautical engineer, it mimics the powerful venturi effect of modern jet turbines which harnesses and compresses air through a compact space, similar to the way wind strengthens as it passes between large buildings.

The 12" blades pitch, hub, and shape are aerodynamically sculpted for maximum efficiency and reduced noise, while the fans enclosed curved housing reduces vibration and provides an additional 10% boost in wind output.

The unit delivers over 11,000 cubic feet of air per minute at a distance of 20', greater than fans twice its size, yet it consumes less energy on its hi ghest setting than a 100 watt bulb. It has a three speed rotary switch and a sturdy nickel plated floor or table stand; can also be wall-mounted. 18" H x 18 1/2" W x 8" D. (12 lbs.)

Three indoor wall mounted units connected to a single outdoor unit. Cool multiple rooms or use for backup systems in remote areas. Each indoor unit has a remote control and is independently controlled for optimum zone cooling flexibility.

The M36TYF1 Ductless Split System features a new level of system flexibility and control at your fingertips with the Advanced Inverter Technology. Inverter Technology lets you reach the desired temperature FASTER, maintain it MORE ACCURATELY, and REDUCE energy costs.

The Warm/Cool Ultrasonic Humidifier.

This humidifier uses ultrasonic vibrations to generate a fine mist that evaporates immediately once it is blown into the air, and it uses an integrated hygrostat to measure humidity relative to room temperature, automatically turning on when the air is too dry and turning off when the user-selected humidity level is reached between.

The humidifier is capable of dispensing warm or cool mist, eliminating the need to keep two separate humidifiers. The unit prevents microbial growth using four methods: high-frequency vibrations, an ionic silver stick that uses the natural sanitizing properties of silver to sanitize, a demineralization cartridge with Ag+ technology, and by preheating the temperature of the water to 176 F.

An easy-to-read LCD an d control panel allow you to quickly change settings.
The detachable 2-gallon water reservoir is easy to fill, and a demineralization cartridge prevents calcification that can inhibit humidifier performance. Produces up to 3 1/2 gallons of mist every 24 hours. 17 1/3" H x 11" W x 9 3/4" L. (8 3/4 lbs.)

The Portable Dehumidifying Air Conditioner.

This air conditioner has an integrated dehumidifier that collects and automatically pumps up to 60 pints of water a day to a sink, sump pump, or out a basement window, eliminating the need to empty cumbersome water receptacles, and its lightweight design and castors ensure ease of portability.

A 3M electrostatic air filter catches 99.97% of air-borne particles (including microparticles of pollen and dust that screen or foam filters miss), never needs cleaning, and requires replacement on ly once a year.

An LED shows current ambient temperature, and the 24 hour programmable timer and four operation modes ensure energy efficiency. Includes a remote control, window bracket, and carrying handles. 37" H x 19 1/2" W x 16" D. (89 lbs.)

Soleus Mini Split air conditioner system and ductless mini split AC unit

ABOUT THE BRAND

Amcor, a leading global technology brand, has been manufacturing interior air treatment appliances for over fifty years. The Amcoraire DUO ductless mini split system is an affordable air treatment amenity that offers energy efficient cooling and heating in a near silent, beautiful wall mounted design.

Developed in response to consumer demand for an alternative to costly central air conditioning installation, the Amcoraire DUO system is a great solution for homes and offi ce environments that do not have the space to run central air ductwork, or require a more affordable, localized cooling and heating system.

Why choose a mini split air conditioner?
A mini split air conditioner is a cost effective choice to central air conditioning. However, it is typically more expensive than a wall or window air conditioner and you need a professional to install it.

Since the compressor sits outside the split air conditioner is very quiet and efficient. Since mini splits have no ducts, they avoid the energy losses associated with the ductwork of central forced air systems. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for space conditioning, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space such as an attic.

Mini split air conditioners are also sometimes easier to install than other types of air conditioning systems. For example, the hook-up between the outdoor and indoor units generally requires only a three inch hole through a wall for the conduit.

Also, most manufacturers of this type of system can provide a variety of lengths of connecting conduits. So, if necessary, you can locate the outdoor unit as far away as 50 feet from the indoor evaporator. This makes it possible to cool rooms on the front side of a building or house with the compressor in a more advantageous or inconspicuous place on the outside of the building.

In comparison to other add-on systems, split air conditioners offer more flexibility in interior design options. The indoor air handlers can be suspended from a ceiling, mounted flush into a drop ceiling, or hung on a wall. Floor-standing models are also available. Most indoor units have profiles of about seven inches deep and usually come with sleek, high tech-looking jackets.

THERMOSTAT IS JUST LIKE THE CONVENTIONAL WALL THERMOSTAT THAT TURNS ON FOR COOLING AND HEATING.

So once you set the temperature for the room for example 70 deg in AC mode, the compressor outside will run and then will shut off once the room is 70 deg, but the indoor unit will keep running to circulate and clean the air. Once the temp of the room jumps up to 75 deg or example, the compressor outside will turn on again and bring the temp in the room down to 70 deg.

The only time it will turn off is if you shut it off Or have it set on a timer setting.

HP Photosmart R937

HP has done a good job with the touch screen interface in terms of both organization and touch sensitivity. In the course of testing the R937, rarely had to hit an icon more than once to get a response.

And seldom touched the wrong command in error because it was set too close to the one wanted. If you have especially large fingers, you may find it helpful to use the little plastic stylus tab that comes attached to the camera's wrist strap.

The screen is viewable in all but extreme light conditions, and the camera doesn't eat up too much battery life. You shouldn't have any problem getting through at least a day of typical snapshot photography, and you can charge the R937 over its USB connection a nice option.

Aside from the shutter release and power button, there are few physical controls on the camera a display button that hides the touch screen icons, a mode switch that selects photo, video, or review and a zoom toggle. The toggle control is laid out vertically instead of horizontally, which may take some getting used to.

Not designed for photographers who prefer manual controls, the R937 is for those who'd rather just point the camera and press the shutter release. To this end, it offers 11 automatic photo capture modes and a video mode. Beyond these basic modes, there are just a few advanced tools for controlling exposure, such as auto bracketing and a spot meter.

Snapshot photographers who want to get the most out of their automatic options will be pleased with the help features HP provides. The included advice is more extensive than most, with items such as general photography tips and accessory information.

The features available in the R937's photo review (playback) mode are more noteworthy than most of its shooting mode options. For instance, the HP Design Gallery lets you make numerous in camera adjustments to color, brightness, and contrast cropping and other image parameters; and to apply a wide variety of effects and borders.

What's nice about the effects is that the look of each one can be adjusted with on screen sliders, and multiple effects can be applied to an image at once. You can, for example, take a photo and turn it into a dark blue sketch on a light blue background with some atmospheric blurring around the edges.

To appease your vanity, the Design Gallery includes tools for minimizing blemishes that you can select on the touch screen, and there's even a slimming effect. The results of the blemish correction feature won't get you a job as a photo retouched, but they'll generally improve images printed and displayed at smaller sizes.

Creative Zen

Creative Technology's Zen Vision M hard drive based portable media player was a crowd pleaser, so we were surprised when the company announced that its update, the new ZEN, would be flash based.

Creative has in fact abandoned hard drive players altogether, and the new ZEN the company's first shot at a flash based music and video player. In terms of general wow factor or ease of use, it's no iPod touch, but it does have a larger screen than the iPod nano and more features, including an FM radio and a voice recorder.

The 4GB and 8GB ZEN flavors match or beat Apple's prices for those capacities, and the 16GB model costs just $250 or $150 less than the same capacity iPod Touch. (SanDisk beats them all with its new $200 16GB Sansa View). The ZEN also has an SD memory card slot to expand the player's capacity, which iPods lack.

If you're looking for a flash player with decent features, performance, and expandability, give the ZEN a try. It will even play unprotected Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) files from your iTunes library.

Samsung P2

When Samsung's P2 was announced a few months back, there was plenty of buzz over this thin, touch screen based player with Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities.

Anyone who craved an iPhone sans phone wanted to check it out. In the interim, the iPod touch was released, and the P2 lost a bit of its luster. Part of the problem is Samsung's lack of planning : The P2's full Bluetooth capabilities, as well as some seemingly simple options like FM recording, are not yet available.

Early P2 owners won't have the firmware upgrades to answer phone calls through the player (arguably the P2's coolest feature) for at least a month, and the FM recording upgrade won't arrive until January 2008.

Still, the P2 is a devilishly handsome gadget that plays video on a sharp 3 inch screen and boasts the typical array of Samsung's excellent user controls (like a seven band EQ).

New Zune 80GB

When the new line of Zunes was announced, the addition of a flash based model stole the show, but the new hard drive based Zune is a huge improvement on its 30 GB predecessor with a better user interface, faster controls, and more features including wireless syncing.

For the same $250 price as the 80GB iPod classic, the new Zune 80GB offers a much larger screen, FM radio, wireless player to player sharing, Wi-Fi syncing with your PC, and a rear panel that can be customized with some cool artwork for free.

Simply put, Apple is no longer the leader in the realm of hard drive based players. While the Zune 80GB and the iPod classic are both outstanding devices, the Zune has more features and it's more fun.
