CES 2011, Parrot Asteroid Car Receiver Has Android, Numerous USB Ports

CES 2011, Parrot Asteroid Car Receiver Has Android, Numerous USB Ports
This year, Parrot is going back to their music-transmitting roots with their aftermarket Asteroid car receiver. Based on Android, the Asteroid runs a heavily modified version thats optimized for in-car use. In other words, theres no touchscreen here. Instead, theres a jog-dial for navigating through menus and plenty of real buttons. However, we think the Asteroids coolest feature is on the back a part youll rarely see.

In addition to the standard RCA audio jacks for hooking up your cars stereo system and a 3.5 mm jack for connecting your MP3 player, there are 3 high speed USB ports and 1 full speed USB port specifically for iPhone, iPod, and iPad. One of those USB ports can be used for the included GPS dongle for navigating via Parrot Maps. The other USB ports can be used for just about anything you want and Parrot tells us that the connections will be easily accessible through the glove compartment. Hook up a USB broadband stick and youve got Internet access in your car. Plug in your phone to charge it. Connect an external The storage device that holds your OS, programs, and data.
Learn Morehard drive and youve got access to your entire music collection via Parrots voice command.

Parrots voice command is truly the killer part of this device. Want to play Pearl Jam from your external hard drive? Just say, Play Pearl Jam. The voice recognition in the receiver will understand what youre saying and play the specified band or song.

While the Asteroid isnt directly connected to the Internet and doesnt have a specific broadband plan connected to it, you can attach your own USB broadband card, then take it out later to use in your laptop.

Another interesting feature of the Asteroid is that despite its Android roots, it doesnt have a touchscreen. Instead, all navigation takes place using buttons, a jog wheel, and voice commands. All in all, we really like what weve seen with the Asteroid and cant wait to see it arrive in the U.S. this summer.

Demy Digital Recipe Gadget for the Kitchen

demy-sb1

By Shane McGlaun

I am a big fan of gadgets of any type really. It doesnt even have to be a gadget I really have a need for it to stoke my geek lust. In my house I cook quite frequently, typically the stuff my kids like, which means lots of Hamburger Helper. I dont mind cooking from the occasional recipe though like my grandma used to do.

Grandma had this huge box filled with old, browning index cards she had been using since the days when computers were science fiction. Today if I want a recipe, collection I dont have to resort to something as old fashioned as actually writing a recipe, I can grab something like the new Demy Digital Recipe reader.

The Demy device is kitchen-safe according to the maker, Key Ingredient, which I assume to mean it can take splashes of olive oil and the occasional sprinkling of salt. Demy has a 7-inch touchscreen and can store tons of recipes in its digital memory from the Key Ingredient website and recipes you copy and paste form other websites or type in manually. The device will ship in May for $299.

MIT Develops Charge In Second Counts

It was not his day we fill or charge the battery up to hourly. Why? Because MIT has developed a new battery technology that allows small and lightweight batteries that can be used for cellphones and other mobile devices that can be filled in seconds, rather than an hourly again.

MIT says that engineers-engineers have been using the existing battery material and change it to make a "beltway" that allows transfer of electrical energy very quickly.

This technology can also be applied to mobile batteries quickly filled, but the time required depends on the electric grid from the user.

This new technology, together with lithium batteries, rechargeable commonly used, will be available in the market in two or three years into the future.

Although lithium batteries have greater energy density, but slow to charge and discharge process. MIT says that the lithium ions in the material will move faster when closer to the tunnel, whereas those near the tunnel is blocked.

Besarta MIT Professor of MIT students solve this problem by creating a new surface structure which allows the lithium ions move outside of the material so that when it reaches the tunnel ions will be diverted into it. This is necessary because the key to faster charge process is to make the ions move through a tunnel that can be accessed via the surface of the material.

Besides making a charge and discharge process will be happening in just 10-20 seconds, this technology also allows the reduction of the size and weight because the material is more durable.

Coming soon, Charge Mobile With Move Your Hand

Have you sometimes run out of phone battery whilst on the move? Maybe a little bit troublesome for you if have to go anywhere with a phone to die, then how about at the same time there was a sudden important call comes in? Wow! It's really an unpleasant thing is not it?

Washington: It is conceivable that one day to charge the battery or the HP iPod just by moving the hand-movement or pick it up while walking the streets. Yes, it might just happen. Because according to news circulating out there in a minute that it can be realized in real life. Just wait!

The experts are considering the use of technology that can convert mechanical energy (motion) derived from body movement, or movement of blood flow in the body into electrical energy (electricity), which harness the vast range of electronic devices without using the battery.

This research may have a major impact on defense technology, environmental monitoring, biomedical science and personal electronics, such as what has been said by the Leadership Research Zhong Lin Wang from Georgia Institute of Technology.

In fact, "the latest Nanogerator could have many applications, and there is a way to run electronic devices commonly used by the military when troops are far away on the battlefield."

According to the researchers, collecting energy from the environment is to change the low-frequency vibrations, such as body movements, heart rate or wind, into the form of electrical energy using Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanowires that can conduct electricity well.

ZnO nanowires are piezoelectric-wire that produces an electric current as it moved hard. The diameter and length of wire size 1 / 5, 000th and 1/25th, which means the size of the diameter of human hair.

In the production of energy originating motion, the researchers conclude that it is the most effective way to develop a method that works on a low frequency and flexibility based on the material elements.

ZnO nanowires combined with any of these ways. At the same time, the researchers said a significant advantage of this technology is that the nanowires can be grown easily in a variety of surfaces, and nanogenerator will work in air or liquids. Type of surface that could make them grow nanowires of metal, ceramic, polymer, clothing and tents. "Simply put, this technology could be used to produce energy in any condition as long as there is movement. Nanogenerator be especially important when in travel demand, where they are far away from sources of energy and need to use a sensor or communication device. "Said Mr. Quin. Wang. This research was conducted at the American Chemical Society's meeting.

Snakebots, Snake Robot Construction Workers

As we know, the construction of buildings or bridges is not an easy job. Not infrequently also occur during a construction accident is underway. Departure from it all, designed Snakebot. Snakebot can handle a dangerous construction work and maintenance.

Snakebot can slip through narrow places, swimming in lakes, plants, and even glide through the air. Mechanics will not be immediately double sliding, but thanks to rapid technological in climbing ability, Snakebot may soon overcome some dangerous jobs.

Equation: Animals reptiles with additional artificial intelligence with the same snakebot that can keep people from dangerous places.

From Virginia Tech University, Dennis Hong and Gabriel Goldman said their robot, named the Hydras, which can be quickly rolled up and down along the piers and columns, which are designed to inspect bridges, construction sites and high-rise buildings, the tasks injuring more than 1000 people per year.

Combination of innovative design engineers make the Hydras become an ideal climber. More than that, can snakebots rocking long on a series of connected metal and rubber module - back and forth, good joints that move up and down or side to side. Hydras that combines the two movements at each joint, so the tight grip when climbing.

Goldman says that he can easily equip Hydras with ultrasound scanners and cameras, so it can inspect bridges and buildings from possible cracks or damage. But now, Snakebot still in the lab. "We want to make it more flexible, so that these robots can only wrap around the pole and then leave."
