 Islam has been one of the earliest religions to care about animal rights. Kindness shown to animals has been promised a reward in the hereafter. Consider this line from Abu Umama, Al Tabarani: ‘He who takes pity even on a sparrow and spares its life, Allah will be merciful to him on the Day of Judgment.’

The Holy Prophet categorically forbade the fighting of animals such as bears, dogs, cocks etc. he admonished those who whipped their animals.

According to Islam human beings are not at liberty to take lives at their beck and call but only when it is necessary. Hunting of birds and animals for sport is clearly forbidden.

Animals represent the wonders of nature created by Allah and they have their own special place in the hierarchy of living beings. There is a purpose behind every living creature and humans do not possess the right to violate their lives.

Animals are divine signs for humanity to take lessons from, to get inspired by and to learn from. A bee, for example, eats only clean things, drops only sweet stuff, any branch it perches upon does not break.

Allah says, “There are [manifest] signs [of truth] in the creation of [humanity and numerous types of] animals scattered [on the earth] for those who believe [in Allah]” (45:4).

"All in all we have secured $350 million in pledges. We hope to raise the commitments to $500 million in a very short time," he told a news conference after the summit, held in Turkey's commercial capital during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The real lesson from the JAIS-church controversy

The recent controversy over the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) raid on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) reminded me of a visit I made to a shelter for Muslim HIV patients in Subang Jaya a few years back.

One of the members of my PKR division was active in a mosque in that area. She introduced me to the shelter, which was being run by the local Muslim community.

Such institutions are important for, as we all know, the stigma against people living with HIV and AIDS is still rampant in our society and hence many of them have a tough time re-integrating with their families and communities upon leaving hospital.

Researcher Karsten Nohl is continuing his crusade to get mobile operators to improve the security of their networks by releasing software that can turn phones into mobile data snoops of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) traffic.

Hong Kong stock exchange website #hacked

The chief executive of the Hong Kong stock exchange has said that a website outage that took place earlier today appears to have been "the result of a malicious attack by outside hacking", the Financial Times has reported.
At first, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd (HKEx) attributed the outage simply to "technical problems". It reassured customers that its trading platform had not been affected.

#Microsoft Patch Tuesday fixes 22 vulnerabilities

As part of its monthly Patch Tuesday upgrades, Microsoft on Tuesday released fixes for 22 vulnerabilities discovered in Internet Explorer, Windows, Visio and Visual Studio.
As previously mentioned, Microsoft released 13 security bulletins, two of which are rated critical in severity, nine important and two moderate. The Redmond, Wash.-based company advised customers to install all of the updates as soon as possible, starting with the two rated most critical.

Johnny Long - From #Google #Hacker to Aid Worker

Johnny Long used to be known for Google hacking: finding vulnerable servers on the internet by using specific search terms. Now, he's helping humanitarian groups, street kids and police in Uganda learn how to use computers and keep malicious hackers out of their systems, as well as matching other information security professionals to charities that need help.
Long, who started the Hackers for Charity non-profit organisation in 2008, launched a new program at the DefCon hacker conference over the weekend that he's calling InfoSec without Borders and which is modelled after the Doctors Without Borders program.

G++ Extension Integrates #Facebook & #Twitter - #googleplus

G++ is a new extension that allows for integration of Facebook and Twitter into Google+. Features include merged streams, cross-network sharing, optimized interaction, and more. The extension is available for both Firefox and Chrome, and you can download it here. I tested it out earlier this week and here’s what I found.

1. Installation

It was a pretty straightforward install for me on Chrome. I just went to the site and clicked the “Add to Chrome” button (you can also get it from the Chrome Web Store).

After installing the extension, if you head over to your Google+ page you should see the G++ icon in the top right, with the option to turn it on, off, or logout.

When turned on, you will see options for Google+, Twitter, and Facebook above your stream. You will have to enable the functionality for Twitter and Facebook by checking each box.

Voip Phone Calls from GMAIL : India

If you have been using Gmail, then you might have already noticed the phone icon in the chat bar.

Voice chat is already very popular and making phone calls from Gmail is also getting popular. Last year, Google started phone calls to USA mobile/landlines from Gmail and now this service is available outside the U.S. by offering calling in 38 new languages.



With the phone calls made from Gmail, you do not have to pay any connection fees, you pay just the talktime. You can now buy calling credit in your choice of four currencies (Euros, British pounds, Canadian dollars or U.S. dollars).



If the service is available in your country you’ll see a little green phone icon show up at the top of your chat list and you’ll be ready to make calls (you’ll need to install the voice and video plug-in if you haven’t already).



If you are calling USA from USA, then your calls are free. However if you are calling outside USA to USA, then you will be charged 1 cent per minute.



The calling rates offered by Gmail phone calls are a bit costly as compared to other voip providers like Localphone, Rebtel. Gmail voice calls to India are charged at 2cent per minute as compared to less than a cent per minute offered by many voip providers.
