Sonys new TV can give two pictures to two viewers

Sonys new TV can give two pictures to two viewers
Sony has recently announced the development of a technology called dual-view, which allows two different viewers to see two different images.

I suppose that this could be used for when two different viewers want to watch two different shows, but they will have to wear headphones so they dont hear each each others audio.

It would appear that Sony wants to market this for gamers. So if two people are playing a game with a split screen, the screen would not have to split.

At a recent press conference, where Sony showed off this technology, the company warned that this will make your eyes hurt. Clearly, some more development is required. Until then, the results are like 3D.

Game On! Which Mobile Gaming Device is Right for You?

When you look through the store for a new mobile gaming device, you may see a few options. How do you know which one is the one you should be taking home?
The two main players in the mobile gaming market are Sony, with it's Playstation Portable, and Nintendo, with it's DS. Both companies have announced a new model of their device which are not out currently. Nintendo's new model will be available March 27, 2011, while Sony's new device's release date is yet to be announced.

NINTENDO DS

Nintendo's DS is geared towards more casual gamers. Pokemon, Mario, and Zelda work great with this device. There is a Call of Duty game on the DS, but the graphics aren't great, and there aren't many games like it on the DS.
The DS uses two screens one on each half of the device. The device folds like a typical clamshell laptop. The top screen is usually where most of the action in a game happens, while the bottom screen, a capacitive touchscreen, is where additional data or controls usually go. On the two sides of the bottom screen are the  A,B,X, and Y buttons, while the other side houses the up, down, right, and left buttons.
The DS is now in it's 4th generation, with the 5th, the 3DS, coming late March. The current model, the DSi XL, measures in at a pretty big 4.2 inches tall, and 6.34 inches across, and weighs about twelve onces.
At a newly lowered price of $169.99 you get, along with the obvious ability of playing games, a front and rear facing camera (although no videochat), as well as some cool effects to add to your photos. The DSi XL includes a microphone, which, along with being useful for blowing up balloons in Mario Cart, can also be used to record sound clips, which can later be edited on the DS.
The DS's online features allow for one to download games and add on's from the DSi Ware store. The device also includes a web browser.
If you want all of the features of the DSi XL, but don't like the big size, the $149.99 DSi is fine.
The game selection on the DS is pretty big, but is focused on casual games. Nintendo brings some exclusive games to the DS, like Mario and Pokemon.
The next generation of the DS, the 3DS, is probably worth waiting until late March for. It's the first mobile gaming device with 3D capability. Read my review here for more info.

SONY PLAYSTATION PORTABLE

PSP 3000
Sony's Playstation Portable, or PSP, is the device for more serious gamers. You'll get great graphics for games like Call of Duty, but casual games are harder to find.
The PSP is available in two models, the PSP 3000, and the PSP Go. The 3000 is a device about 6.7 inches across, and 2.7 inches tall. At 6.7 grams, the PSP 3000 is almost half the weight of the DSi XL, making it much more portable.
The PSP 3000 uses small CD-like disks for games and movies, but also has support for storing content on a memory card.
The front of the PSP 3000 houses the 4.3 inch screen, as well as the legendary Playstation buttons. On the other side of the screen is the up, down, left, and right buttons. A mini joystick can be found right under the directional buttons.
With the PSP's built in WiFi, you can surf the net, download RSS podcasts, and even download and read comics. The PSP also allows you to remotely play games on your Plastation 3 (a device you hook up to the TV) that's at home.
PSP Go
The PSP 3000 directly competes with the DSi XL with the MSRP of $169.99. For the same price as the DSi XL, you get more intense graphic capabilities, a built in microphone, a big 4.3 inch screen, and even the ability to make calls using Skype.
The PSP Go is almost identical in features to the PSP 3000, the main difference is the fact that you have to download games onto the device, as there is no disk drive. The Go also sports a slide out piece that houses the controls.
Sony recently announced a new model of the PSP, known as the PSP2. This device sports a touchscreen and some more new features, but no pricing or release date information is available yet.

SURPRISE, THE IPOD TOUCH

Although most don't think of an iPod as a gaming device, the iPod Touch is close to outselling both the DS and the PSP. The iPod Touch is surprisingly good with games, but almost all of the games on the Touch are aimed at very casual games.
The iPod Touch is not only a gaming deice, and also allows you to install other apps to do things like read books, book airline tickets, and manage your calander.
See my review of the entire line of iPods for more details on the Touch here.

Overall, the iPod Touch is great for the very casual gamer who also wants to listen to music, watch movies, and even be productive on their gaming device. For the gamer who wants a device mostly devoted to gaming, but still focusing on more casual games, the DS is a great device. The more extreme gamer should go with the PSP. While he PSP has the ability to play movies and other content, it's much better at gaming, and you'll probably find that that's all you're doing with it.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo review, feature and specs

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo
Sony Ericsson has recently announced a mobile phone, called the XPERIA Neo. Couple of months back, there was a news that the mobile phone manufacturer is bringing two new handsets called Anzu and Hallon. The former one was renamed and announced as Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc, but there was a speculation about the later one, which is supposed to include the similar form factor of Vivaz. Now, there is end of all such speculations as the handset is named as Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo and it will be available in the market by the month of March, 2011.

The similarity of SE XPERIA Neo with SE Vivaz ends with the form factor. The functionalities of the phone are of higher standard and you can clearly understand that once you go through the detailed specifications in the following portions of the review. The phone definitely looks cute and attractive. It may not be as dashing and high-end as Samsung Galaxy S II, which is also announced during the same period, but it definitely has its own sets of appeal. The handset fits well on your palm and you will surely like its semi-anodised finish along with easy to access key arrangement at the front and superb front facing camera. The cool ear piece and light sensor adds up to the benefits of the device.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo Easy Handling of Control Keys
Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo
The quality of the sensor is definitely much better than the usual VGA hardware devices that are available in plenty these days. Apart from that, the other furniture of the phone is nicely arranged as well. You can easily access the power or lock key in the right side of the phone, irrespective of the big screen display. Right under it, you can access the volume key to control the sound. In fact, you can easily adjust the volume by holding the phone to your ears.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo Different Ports

The built of the phone is quite sturdy like the other handsets by Sony Ericsson. SE XPERIA Neo looks strong with its plastic and chrome type covering. You will find three ports in the mobile phone for diverse functionalities such as mini HDMI out connection, 3.5mm headphone jack and a microUSB connection port. It is expected that Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo also loads a cable to support functionality of its HDMI port so that you can stream high quality High Definition movies directly on your television screen.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo Display and look

The display of XPERIA Neo is a big highlight. The size of the screen is quite big at 3.7 inches and being a LED backlit LCD capacitive touch screen, it is going to provide a superb experience to the users. The colour visibility of the phone is 16 millions and its resolution is 480 x 854 pixels. It also loads the Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine, which ensures the experience of watching movies or videos over the phone will be immaculate. Other major highlights of the display includes scratch resistant surface, multi touch input method, proximity sensor for auto turn off, accelerometer sensor for UI auto rotate, and Timescape UI.

The appearance of the phone is minimal, yet it is attractive. On top of the display and the back of the phone, you will notice the logo of Sony Ericsson, while the major functional keys (back, home, & menu) are at the bottom. Right below these keys, you will find the label of XPERIA, while you have camera lenses at the top of the front and the back of the handset.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo Storage and camera

The storage capacity is very crucial for the smartphones because the number of features and applications are quite high. XPERIA Neo is a sophisticated smart phone and hence it needs good storage capacity and Sony Ericsson does not disappoint in this aspect. The device is equipped with a 320 MB internal memory and a microSD card slot that can load memory up to 32 GB. As the internal memory is not big enough, the phone comes with a 8 GB memory card that will be included within the package.

Do you want to know what the biggest highlight of the phone is after its excellent display features, then it has to be the camera. SE XPERIA Neo loads an 8 mega pixel snapper that is capable to click images at 3264 x 2448 pixels resolution along with high end features such as LED flash, auto focus, touch focus, geo tagging, face and smile detection and video calling. The features of the camera are no less than a decent digital camera. It can also record high quality videos at 720p @30 fps with video light and continuous auto focus. Therefore, the experience of both still photography and video recording is awesome.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo Music and Video

If you liked the excellent features of XPERIA Neos camera, then the other multimedia features like music and video players will also impress you. The music player can play diverse music files such as MP3/ WMA/ WAV/ eAAC+; while there is a video playback that can stream MP4/H.264/WMV. There is Stereo FM radio with RDS for added advantage to the music lovers, while you can connect the handset to the TV via HDMI port to enjoy HD quality video on big screen.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo is powered by Android v2.3 Gingerbread and Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon 1 GHz processor. Along with that the availability of HSDPA and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n makes sure that the experience over the phone will be quite fast and easy.

Apple Pulling other eReader Apps? (Update: Apple Responds)

Gadgetator's trying a new format for the not so tech savvy readers. At the beginning of each post, we will be writing a list of tech jargon and their definitions that one would need to know at the beginning of the article. Like this idea? Hate it? Please leave a comment with your feedback. Thank you.

eReader-An eReader is a device that allows you to read digital books instead of paper ones.

Sony makes an eReader called the Sony Reader. As with many eReaders, Sony designed an iPhone app that allowed one to read the eBooks that they downloaded from Sony on their iPhone. This app was rejected by Apple for some unknown reason.
Apps are rejected all the time by Apple, but it's always because of a violation of one of Apple's rules. So far the Kindle, the Nook, and many more eReaders have apps on the iPhone that weren't rejected. This could simply be because the Sony app had some problem with the code that went against Apple's rules. It could also be that Apple has changed it's policy and is now not allowing third party eReader apps.
Apple also has an eReader app called iBooks, which is the reason why one would think that Apple is rejecting other, third party eReader apps, and even may start to pull the old ones.
According to the New York Times, Apple is changing their policies to no longer allow third party apps to sell content, like eBooks, inside their apps. Now, if you're worrying about games like Farmville, which allows you to buy coins from inside the app for the game, that's nothing to worry about, this does not stop app developers to sell through their apps, rather just requires them to use Apple as an intermediary.
The story seems true, as Sony spokesperson Steve Harber is quoted, "Its the opposite of what we wanted to bring to the market, we always wanted to bring the content to as many devices as possible, not one device to one store.
So what does this mean for other eReader apps? Although the other apps don't have an integrated bookstore, they do allow users to download already purchased content from other devices, something which, according to the New York Times, Apple said was against the rules. This would affect Amazon with it's Kindle and many other popular eBook apps.
For now, we'll just have to see what happens. The story seems very believable, and neither Apple, Sony, or Amazon would comment.

UPDATE: Apple responded saying that they had not changed any developer guidelines, but wants a cut of anything sold through their devices.

Sony Bravia KDL46EX500 LCD TV's Review

Sony Bravia KDL46EX500 LCD TV's Review
With the Pro Bowl now just a memory and the Super Bowl staring us right in the face, youve still got some time left to get your hands on a new television ahead of that biggest of games (at least as far as football goes). Thus, this week, were going after the low-hanging fruit, the most abundant of modelsand often the least expensivethe LCD television. We kick off our week with the Sony Bravia KDL46EX500, which is going to really impress both you and anyone you have over for the big game.

The Sony Bravia KDL46EX500 is a forty six inch 1080p LCD television that offers Motionflow 120Hz technology to cut down on blurring by bumping the frame display rate up (most televisions operate on a sixty hertz cycleMotionflow ups that to one hundred twenty), LightSensor technology to change the brightness level based on conditions in the room, Ambient Sensor systems to change other settings to match conditions, the Bravia Engine 2 image processor, two ten watt speakers with simulated surround, 24p True Cinema display mode, a variety of video modes, four HDMI ports, two component inputs, two composite inputs, a PC input, a USB port, and an optical digital audio output.

Ill say right off that I found the picture on this one pretty impressive, especially for an LCD television. Granted, its no 3D LED, but its still pretty nice indeed. Its also somewhat dismaying to see that theres no internet connectivity here, which is steadily becoming more of a requirement. But still, this plays equally well with old and new hardware, and is great for someone trading up from an old television.

The going price for this one (or so I found at four different places) is eight hundred ninety eight bucks, which is a little on the healthy side for a forty six inch television, but still mostly in line.

If you want a big, impressive new television for the Super Bowl, take a look at the Sony Bravia KDL46EX500, a television that should keep you front and center on the action.

Sony e-Reader Price Slash To Compete With Kindle And Nook

Sony e-Reader Price Slash To Compete With Kindle And Nook
If you prefer Sony brand e-book reader, here is a piece of good news for you. Just recently, the Japanese consumer electronics maker has slashed its price of all the three models of its e-readers to make them more affordable to public.

If you recall, Sony e-reader devices have been in market for quite a while but with the widely available and more advanced rivals products such as Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook, it sees the need to adjust its retail price in order to stay competitively in this niche market. With the new price announcement, its entry level pocket version will be retailed at $149, which is about $20 from original $169. Meanwhile, its Touch Reader were down by $30 to $169 (original cost $199). Similarly, its mainstream highest end model, Daily Edition is now priced at $299, a significant $50 down from previous $349.

Apparently, Sony has tried a different approach and instead of focusing on developing new feature with cutting edge technologies to compete with other rivals products, it chooses to lower down the retail price to compete against other newly launched models with more comprehensive feature sets. However, with its slightly out-of-date e-ink technology and lack of mobile connection capability, it could be tough to excel even in its own geographic areas.

Sony Bravia KDL55HX800 LED Television Review

Sony Bravia KDL55HX800 LED Television Review
Were going in for a look at LED televisions this week, the big, impressive new entries in the home theater pantheon. And for the most part, were going to find some good stuff, some clearly better than others. Our first stop is with the Sony Bravia KDL55HX800, a big, impressive model that should really put a spark in your home movie watching.

The Sony Bravia KDL55HX800 is a fifty five inch 1080p LED television that operates at 240 HZ and is 3D ready once you get all the necessary extra components. Youll also get internet connectivity (an extra dongle provides wireless access) that will get you access to a wide variety of content sources, the Bravia Engine 3 image processor, two ten watt speakers with Dolby Digital decoder, Deep Color technology, Live Color Technology, four HDMI ports, two component inputs, two composite inputs, one ethernet jack, an RF port, a USB port, a PC input, three analog audio inputs and an optical digital audio output.

You get in front of a fifty five inch LED that could handle 3D and its hard not to say this thing has an amazing picture. Its not as good as some, really, but with LED, its pretty much a foregone conclusion that it will look at the very least good. The sound isnt the best here either, especially with just two ten watt speakers and only Dolby Digital to back them up. The controls are friendly enough, there are plenty of options, and I love a television that plays just as well with older gear as new.

Price will be an issue here, as you can find this in a few different places at $2598, an oddly specific price, but still. Its a hefty price tag, but you should be fairly satisfied with the final outcome.

The Sony Bravia KDL55HX800 is a surprisingly nice television for the money, but be prepared to put out a hefty sum if you want this as part of your home theater system.
